Handrail. Handrails are required on both sides of stair.
Height of handrail has to be between 34"-38" in height.
2003 IBC sec-- 1009.11
2 Intermediate Handrail. An intermediate handrail is
required in the center of the stair and installed so that
all portions of the stairway width required for egress
capacity are within 30" of a handrail. These stairs have
been determined for egress capacity to be a minimum of 75"
in width. 2003 IBC sec.-1009.2
3 Handrail Grasp ability and Continuity. Handrail
grasability and continuity shall be in compliance to 2003
IBC sections, 1009.11.3 & 1009.11.4
4 Handrail Extensions. Handrail extensions are required to
be a minimum of 12" beyond the bottom or top riser. 2003
IBC sec.-1009.11.5
5 Guards. All guards shall be a minimum of 42" measured
from the walking surface to the top of the guard when used
for fall protection greater than 30". This includes both
sides of stairs. A combination Guard/I-Iandrail is not
allowed. Handrails shall be mounted on the inside of the
guard between 34"-38" in height 2003 IBC sec.-1012.1 &
1012.2.
6 Headroom Clearance. A minimum of 7'0" headroom clearance
is required at the exit discharge at grade and measured to
the bottom of the stairs/landings
7 Exit Illumination. The exit discharge/stairs shall be
illuminated per section ]006.1 of the 2003 IBC. The exit
discharge system for these stairs shall be maintained at
all times.
