Re: Lionshead Snowmelt System
Date: April 11', 2006
After further review and discussions regarding the Lionshead Arrabelle Public snowmelt system design the following
conclusions have been made.
It has always been the Town's position that the intent of the language found in the Arrabelle DIA, regarding quality of the
proposed public snowmelt system, was to assure that the snowmelt system installed by Vail Resorts for the Town of Vail
was to an equal standard and specification to the Town's Vail Village snowmelt system; including not only the ability to
melt snow but to provide the same flexibility, control, and efficiencies.
After many discussions between Vail Resorts, the Town of Vail, and the mechanical engineering firms of each, it has
become evident that the measurement of efficiencies and flexibility of the Town's Vail Village system as compared to the
proposed Lionshead snowmelt system is not yet calculable and is more intuitive at this point.
Therefore the Town will agree to the general design of the currently proposed Lionshead snowmelt system with the
following modifications/additions:
1. The heat mains shall be insulated to the same insulation R value as installed in the Vail Village system.
2. The"foil/bubble" insulation equivalent to that installed in the Vail Village system shall be installed as per the
Vail Village specifications.
3. A chemical feeder shall be installed in the system as per the Vail Village system specifications
4. A DDC Remote Monitoring system shall be installed to be monitored from locations as directed by the Town
of Vail with the following points:
a. Water Temperature at"T" locations as depicted in the attached drawing
b. Pump status"on/off' for pumps SMP3 & SMP4& HWP3 &HWP4
c. Alarm for SMP3 & SMP4 commanded"on" but status"off'
d. HX3 zone valve position
e. BTU meter reading
f. Glycol feeder low level alarm
g. Snowmelt system status—"idle/melt/off'
5. Installation of continuous conduit to all manifold boxes for future control wires from the boiler room. Use of
the Utility trench conduit is allowable. Agreement from Vail Resorts to provide space within the Arrabelle
boiler room adequate for DDC controls for the Town of Vail Snowmelt.
6. Installation of valves at each manifold for each zone for future additional DDC control installation.
7. Installation of the BTU meter on the downstream side of the heat exchanger as shown in the attached drawing.
In addition to the above conditions the Town of Vail and Vail Resorts shall enter into an agreement clarifying these
conditions and Vail Resorts shall submit a full set of snowmelt construction drawings and specifications to the Town of
Vail for review and approval, both prior to the start of construction.
