Box 8338 Avon, CO 81620 Subject- Excavation Observation Proposed Residence Lot 8 - 5t. Moritz Way Vail, Colorado lob No. 06-159 41- As requested, a representative from our office observed the foundation materials exposed in the open excavation for the proposed residence on December S, 13, and 14, 2006. The purpose of our observations were to verify that the proper bearing material had been exposed in the excavation for the proposed residence. The excavation for the proposed residence varied in depth from approximately 4.0 to 30.0 f:et in depth. The material exposed in the bottom of the excavations consisted of a natural, brown, slifhtly moist to tnoist, medium dense to dense, silry sand and gavel with cobbles. No frost was observed in the soils exposed in the base of the excavation durin.- our observations. In addition, the soils at the base of the excavation had been compacted at the time of our final observation. Tf the compacted soils in the base of the excavation become loose during the placement of forms for the footings, we recommend that any soils be re- compacted or removed prior to construction of the footings. Provided the above recommendations are followed, it is our opinion that the materials exposed within the excavation will support a spread footing foundation system designed for a maximum allowable soil bearing pressure of 3,000 psf. Our opinion is based on the material exposed in the base of the excavation and the foundation subgradt: remainiti.- unsaturated, frost free, unfrozen, and properly compacted during contruction. The opinions presented in this letter are based on our en-ineerDlg experience in the area and on our observation of the materials exposed at the base of the foundation excavation.
