Overall Event or Program Highlights & Successes
4
• Increased sponsorships/table sales by 34% over previous year
• Increased attendance by 16% over previous year
• Increased Paddle Raise donations by 25% over previous year
• Three middle schools (Vail Mountain School, Berry Creek Middle, and Homestake
Peak School) hosted school competitions to vie for a coveted runway entry spot at
the main event which lead to an event showcase of all student designs
• Design entry spots sold out by word-of-mouth within 4 weeks of opening the
design entry sign up in November; a wait list was created — the first time since
the event’s inception eight years ago
• Provided an arena for open dialogue about student mental health
and the social emotional learning needs in our schools
Program Impact, Testimonials & Observations
5
• Pictured right: Homestake Peak School
created a Project Funway showcase to
display student designs representing
their school at the 2019 event.
• “I was amazed to see the Vail
community come together in such
strong support of local education.
It was an honor to serve as a judge
for Project Funway and be part of
an event that helps further the very
important work of the Education Foundation of Eagle County.
My sister Annabel and I had a wonderful time and were incredibly
impressed by the creativity and talent of the designers."
— Brittany Bowlen, daughter of Denver Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen
Program Impact, Testimonials & Observations
6
• “Thank you for such a FANTASTIC, FUN event! It was amazing, and the creativity
was so inspiring! Our guests loved every second, as did we… Congratulations to
you, your team and volunteers—can't wait for next year... PS: A friend of mine
who runs Central Institute for the Deaf in St Louis saw my posts and asked about
the event. They are looking for a fun event that includes the kids, parents and
community. I gave her your emails and suggested that she or her development
person contact you.” — Gina Browning and Joe Illick
• “Congratulations on a wonderful Project Funway! As an artist, I really enjoy and
appreciate that this idea showcases the amazing creative talent in our community
-- the concepts and craftsmanship behind the projects were incredible. I posted
photos and videos on my personal Facebook page, which includes colleagues from
all over the United States. This kind of event only happens in a few, very rare
places. Standing ovation! Please share our gratitude and kudos.”
— Daniel Dougherty, Director of Communications, Eagle County Schools
Estimated Attendance Results
7
• Estimated attendance: 670 tickets issued; 579 guests checked in
• Number/percentage of people who came specifically for event/program:
40% participants (designers, models, production, hair + makeup, volunteers)
38% table seating guests
22% reserved and general admission guests
• Number/percentage of people who attended the event last year:
592 tickets issued; 496 guests checked in. We have not run a cross check of
guest names that would tell us how many of the guests are returning.
However we have that capability with our event software.
Estimated Attendee Profile Results
8
• Where did attendees come from? (local, regional, out of state, international):
A majority of guests are local/regional with CO zip codes. However, this
includes a decent selection of second homeowners and their guests. There is
great potential to attract international and resort guests if we have better
access to Town of Vail and Vail Resorts marketing channels. EFEC’s executive
director and the event producer attended the marketing summit presentation
in the spring of 2018 to explore cross-marketing opportunities and attempted
to employ opportunities presented. We found this quite challenging. We have
reached out to the Vail Local Marketing District the past two years with limited
response. We believe Project Funway has broad appeal and we have excellent
marketing materials with limited funding for distribution. Strategic
partnerships are crucial for our marketing reach moving forward.
Estimated Spending Results
9
• Estimated average spending per person:
Survey results showed limited spending in Vail. This data was very
difficult to gather. Should the Town decide to support this event again,
the organization would seek guidance on how to gather this
information.
NPS (Net Promoter Score)
10
Attendee Response: How likely is it that you would recommend this event/program to a
friend or colleague?
When asked in a post event survey if guests would return and bring a friend, results showed
43% of guests would definitely return; 29% would probably return; and 29% might return; 0
responses of no, I will not return.
The NPS Calculation
Calculate your NPS using the answer to a key question, using a 0-10 scale: How likely is it that you would recommend
[brand] to a friend or colleague?
Promoters (score 9-10) are loyal enthusiasts who will keep buying and refer others, fueling growth.
Passives (score 7-8) are satisfied but unenthusiastic customers who are vulnerable to competitive offerings.
Detractors (score 0-6) are unhappy customers who can damage your brand and impede growth through negative
word-of-mouth.
Event Strengths & Weaknesses
11
• How did the event/program exceed expectations?
Production value and runway was ideal for the venue. It has taken three
years to refine the lighting, sound and stage to guest seating ratio.
Designer interest: All design spots sold out within 30-45 days of
announcement by word-of-mouth and a couple of emails.
Middle school design competitions spurred organically by the event
without instigation and was thrilling to see evolve.
• What are areas for event/program improvement? Catering in Dobson
Arena continues to be the biggest, most expensive challenge.
• How did this year’s event/program compare to last year? It was bigger
and better however the expenses show our challenges clearly.
Vail Brand Compatibility
The Premier International Mountain Resort Community
12
• How did the event /program support the Vail Brand?
The most consistent feedback Project Funway garners is that it is the most
unique and creatively inspiring event in Eagle County. In fact, Ken
Schanzer, who attended the event for the first time this year, said this was,
without a doubt, the most exciting and fun event he has ever attended.
Adding, that he has attended a lot of events. People from other areas of
the country are interested in replicating the event. Both of these examples
illustrate “premier” and “like nothing on earth”. The event transcends
international appeal—much like the fashion industry—through visual
display, material and music choices, and designer inspiration.
Brand Positioning:
• Town of Vail: The Premier International Mountain Resort Community
• Vail Mountain: Like nothing on earth
Community Contribution
13
Project Funway’s contribution to our community is quite possibly the
strongest attribute of the event. Community participation is crucial to event
success while highlighting arts enrichment in education.
• The unique designs submitted for the runway by the community at
large, in three age groups, are the essence of the event promoting arts
enrichment in our schools as well as throughout the county.
• Local business community supports arts enrichment by sponsoring the
event and the contribution is recognized with a design on the runway.
Businesses may also make a cash donation or give silent auction items.
• School student communities compete with each other and a showcase
of student designs is highlighted at the event.
Community Contribution Continued
14
• Project Funway theme aligns thoughtfully with the Art In Public Places
program: event content is a collection of designs which is educational
through the process of creation, attractive to residents and guests, with
an overall presentation of aesthetic quality that is representative of Vail.
• The event brings extensive community exposure to Dobson Arena for
use as more than an ice arena; it transforms the venue into an edgy and
exciting fashion runway presentation.
• The 2019 event garnered attention to our community from prominent
Denver socialites including Brittany Bowlen and her sister Annabel,
daughters of Pat Bowlen, owner of the Denver Broncos; and Mondo
Guerra, New York designer and Denver native who were both judges.
We are also in conversations with Denver Art Museum for a strategic
partnership.
Topline Marketing Efforts
15
What are the top 3 successful marketing tactics, executions or results from your
event/program?
1) Vail Daily continues to be our best marketing approach with a frequency of 3 ads
of varying sizes for 7 weeks leading up to the event.
2) Online and email marketing was effective to target our returning guests and
returning sponsors
3) Concierge Cards are very well received by the hotels throughout Vail Village,
Lionshead and the Town. Tracking this approach is evolving.
• Complete marketing plan attached to end of presentation.
Potential for Growth & Sponsorships/Media Exposure
16
2020 Event Planning includes: opening up stadium seating with cash bar and snacks for
community priced tickets (to offset Dobson expenses and broaden audience
accessibility); refining the table and floor seating ratio for more thoughtful ticket
pricing aligned with catering options. Regional partnerships and influencers
2020 Target Sponsors (Including existing and potential sponsors): The 2020 Project
Funway Committee looks forward to solidifying relationships forged during
solicitations for the 2019 event including Denver Art Museum, Museum of
Contemporary Art Denver, and Colorado Mesa University, in addition to our
continuing relationships with Vail Health, Town of Vail, Knapp Ranch, RA Nelson,
Eagle County Schools, Remagine Designs, US Bank, First Bank, Alpine Bank, Slifer
Smith & Frampton Foundation, Perch, Vail Honeywagon and many more.
2020 Media Exposure will include and extend to: For targeting the Front Range we will
include the cultivation of strategic partnerships with art and design
community listed above and leverage their promotions and influencers
combined with the current approach to the local market.
Sustainability Efforts
17
• What measures were taken at your event/program to support the
environmentally-friendly goals of the Town of Vail? The Project Funway 2019
Committee elected to not create an event program for the audience to follow but
rather uploaded a slideshow with designers, models, materials and event recap on
our website for guests to reference.
• What waste reduction methods were used during your event/program? The
Project Funway 2019 Committee took on added expenses of renting dishware,
glassware and serving utensils to reduce the amount of waste.
• How could you improve on sustainability efforts for next year’s event? The
Committee will continue to keep sustainability as a top priority as the event is
based on a creative use of found materials.
The Town of Vail is committed to the stewardship and protection of our unique mountain environment. In consideration
of both our local and global impacts and opportunities, our environmental vision is to demonstrate and promote:
renewable energy, resource efficiency, ecosystem protection, and community awareness and education.
