HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-01 Recognizing Vail Valley Athletes Participating in 2018 OlympicsTOWN OF VAIL` PROCLAMATION NO. 1, SERIES OF 2018 RECOGNIZING VAIL VALLEY ATHLETES PARTICIPATING IN 2018 OLYMPICS TO BE HELD IN PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA WHEREAS, the XXIII Winter Olympics will be held over the course of 17 days, from February 9-25, 2018, and the XII Paralympic Winter Games will be held from March 9-18, 2018, in several locations across South Korea, the first time in three decades that the country will host the games, with the opening ceremony on Feb. 9 and closing ceremony on Feb. 25, and most snow sports events taking place in PyeongChang; and WHEREAS, there will be an estimated 3,000 athletes from across the globe, with over 90 countries represented from regions of Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania, who will participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics, competing in 102 events in 15 disciplines, with additional new events as part of the Olympic programming, including Men's and Women's Snowboard Big Air, Men's and Women's Speed Skating Mass Start, Curling Mixed Doubles, and the Alpine Skiing Nations Team Event; and WHEREAS, there are two hundred forty-two (242) athletes from the United States participating in the Games, thirty-one (31) athletes from the State of Colorado, and eighteen 18) of those athletes having ties to Eagle County; these local competitors have been selected to represent the United States and five other countries in the upcoming 2018 Olympics, and will compete in a multitude of winter sports, such as Freestyle Skiing, Freestyle Skiing -Half pipe, Moguls, Snowboard Cross, Downhill / Super G / Combined, Slalom / GS / Combined, Hockey, GS Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Ski Cross; and WHEREAS, it is a time to specially recognize not only our local Olympic contingent, but the trainers, mentors and organization of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail; whose mission it has been to instill the values of "character, courage and commitment" in its cultivation of numerous champions; it is a time to commend these athletes for their countless hours of training, acknowledge their successes and disappointments in competition, and honor them for their incredible dedication and extended commitment to their selected winter sport; and WHEREAS, our Vail community extends our most gracious encouragement and full support to our Vail Valley athletes whose names follow: and extends our best wishes to all eighteen competitors participating in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.
