A\~ ji ,perഀ R 1 `I li j, Tഀ Vail Fire Departmentഀ Asbestos Testing & Abatement Requirementsഀ M~RCENCV SE~~c~ഀ Asbestos testing and abatement protects workers, homeowners, neighbors and emergency services responders fromഀ exposure to harmful asbestos. The Town of Vail asbestos abatement program is in addition to the State of Colorado'sഀ regulations. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly for theirഀ requirements at the contact info listed below.ഀ When is asbestos testing required?ഀ ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials requireഀ asbestos testing:ഀ One- and Two-Family Dwellings: 30 square feetഀ All Others: 160 square feetഀ Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit.ഀ Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1 % require abatement by a State-certified andഀ Vail-registered abatement contractor. An asbestos abatement permit must be approved, and theഀ clearance letter must be submitted to the Town of Vail before the building permit will be issued.ഀ Project Checklistഀ My project falls into the category checked below:ഀ ❑ Will not disturb more than the threshold limits identified aboveഀ Tested negative, or at 1 % or below (2 copies of test results included)ഀ ❑ Tested positive at more than 1 requires abatement (2 copies of test resultsഀ included)ഀ Tips & Facts:ഀ • Even recent construction projects may include asbestos-containing materials, so buildings of aan , age requireഀ testing.ഀ • The "1989 Ban" on asbestos-containing materials is commonly misunderstood. "In fact, in 1991 the U.S. Fifthഀ Circuit Court of Appeals vacated much of the so-called "Asbestos Ban and Phaseout" rule and remanded it toഀ the EPA. Thus, much of the original 1989 EPA ban on the U.S. manufacturing, importation, processing, orഀ distribution in commerce of many asbestos-containing product categories was set aside and did not take effect."ഀ - CDPHEഀ Asbestos test results and abatement permit applications should be submitted to. The existing structure of the unit consists of glue-laminated roof beams thatഀ support 2x tongue and groove roof decking. The roof beams are supported onഀ exterior walls and a bearing line above the kitchen.ഀ 2. The renovation plan shows that all existing bearing posts, walls, and beams willഀ remain in place and only non-bearing walls are to be removed or relocated. Inഀ particular, the existing posts that are in the bearing line above the kitchen willഀ remain in place.ഀ In summary, we have determined that the structural frame of the building will not beഀ altered by this renovation, and loading of lower level framing will not be changed. Theഀ framing inside the unit should be reviewed by our office during construction so that it canഀ be confirmed that structural framing is not altered.ഀ Please call if you have any questions.ഀ Very truly yours,ഀ SP .eഀ MONROE & NEWELL ENGINEERS, INC.ഀ 25799ഀ Hannes Spaeh, P.E.ഀ Principal Coഀ A Component of The American Institute of Architectsഀ Platinum Sponsorഀ 15 Consecutiv Yeanഀ www. monroe-newell. comഀ 70 Benchmark Road • Suite 204 . The minimum re-ഀ quired sprinkler flow rate for systemsഀ designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13Rഀ are given in Table A as a function ofഀ temperature rating and the maximumഀ allowable coverage areas. The sprin-ഀ kler flow rate is the minimum requiredഀ discharge from each of the total num-ഀ ber of "design sprinklers" as specifiedഀ in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R.ഀ For systems designed to NFPA 13, theഀ number of design sprinklers is to beഀ the four most hydraulically demandingഀ sprinklers. Higher levels of torque mayഀ distort the sprinkler inlet with conse-ഀ quent leakage or impairment of theഀ sprinkler.ഀ Do not attempt to compensate for in-ഀ sufficient adjustment in the Coverഀ Plate/Retainer Assembly by under-orഀ over-tightening the Sprinkler. Read-ഀ just the position of the sprinkler fittingഀ to suit.ഀ Step 1. The sprinkler must only beഀ installed in the pendent position andഀ with the centerline of the sprinklerഀ perpendicular to the mountingഀ surface.ഀ Step 2. Remove the Protective Cap.ഀ Step 3. Do not attempt to mod-ഀ ify or repair a damaged sprinkler.ഀ Step 6. Screw on the Cover Plate As-ഀ sembly until its flange comes in con-ഀ tact with the ceiling.ഀ Do not continue to screw on the Coverഀ Plate Assembly such that it lifts a ceil-ഀ ing panel out of its normal position.ഀ If the Cover Plate Assembly cannotഀ be engaged with the Mounting Cupഀ or the Cover Plate Assembly cannotഀ be engaged sufficiently to contact theഀ ceiling, the Sprinkler Fitting must beഀ repositioned.ഀ Care andഀ Maintenanceഀ The Tyco® Rapid Response TM Seriesഀ LFII (TY3596) must be maintainedഀ and serviced in accordance with theഀ following instructions:ഀ EMഀ Absence of a Cover Plate may delay theഀ sprinkler operation in a fire situation.ഀ When properly installed, there is aഀ nominal 118 inch (3,2 mm) air gap be-ഀ tween the lip of the Cover Plate andഀ the ceiling, as shown in Figure 3. Thisഀ air gap is necessary for proper oper-ഀ ation of the sprinkler by allowing heatഀ flow from a fire to pass below andഀ above the Cover Plate to help assureഀ appropriate release of the Cover Plateഀ in a fire situation. If the ceiling is to beഀ repainted after the installation of theഀ Sprinkler, care must be exercised toഀ ensure that the new paint does NOTഀ seal off any of the air gap.ഀ Factory painted Cover Plates MUSTഀ NOT be repainted. They should be re-ഀ placed, if necessary, by factory paint-ഀ ed units. Non-factory applied paintഀ may adversely delay or prevent sprin-ഀ kler operation in the event of a fire.ഀ Do not pull the Cover Plate relative toഀ the Enclosure. Separation may result.ഀ Before closing a fire protection systemഀ main control valve for maintenanceഀ work on the fire protection systemഀ which it controls, permission to shutഀ down the affected fire protection sys-ഀ tem must be obtained from the prop-ഀ er authorities and all personnel whoഀ may be affected by this action must beഀ notified.ഀ Sprinklers which are found to be leak-ഀ ing or exhibiting visible signs of corro-ഀ sion must be replaced.ഀ Automatic sprinklers must never beഀ painted, plated, coated, or otherwiseഀ altered after leaving the factory. Modi-ഀ fied or over heated sprinklers must beഀ replaced.ഀ TFP442ഀ Care must be exercised to avoid dam-ഀ age -before, during, and after installa-ഀ tion.
