Is this a new or existing event/program in Vail? New 2. Please provide a detailed description of the event/program and its activities. Plants Are an Answer will be Betty Ford Alpine Gardens’ 2021 year-round annual theme. Based on Project Drawdown’s comprehensive and positive plan to reverse global warming, BFAG will display 16 stunning panels focused on Drawdown’s plant- based solutions. There can be a general feeling of hopelessness when it comes to solutions for a changing climate due to increasing greenhouse gases. Plants Are an Answer gives positive, down-to-earth ways to make an impact. In Ford Park, the theme will be Extraordinary Ecoregions, highlighting 10 of the “Global 200” ecoregions of exceptional biodiversity identified by the World Wildlife Fund. We will display outdoor panels that will bring different worldwide ecosystems to life for visitors and community members who do not have the opportunity or are not physically able to visit these unique areas. Year-round programs will include eight evening speaker webinars or live events (dependent on Covid protocols) based on the new annual theme, giving attendees the opportunity to interact with experts in their field. Highlights include Dr. Ian Miller of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, an expert on plant adaptations through deep time, and Dr. Ken Tape, who has observed and documented changes in Alaska’s tundra, including the invasion of beavers - the tundra be dammed! Workshops, guided activities, family scavenger hunt and always-available self-guided family activities will be designed around the Plants Are an Answer theme. Two self-guided tour brochures are available and guided activities are designed with Covid protocols in mind. Guided snowshoe ecology tours are offered throughout the winter months. Snowshoes are available any time for self-guided visitor adventures with self-guided brochures. The BFAG Visitor Center is the only facility that offers a winter nature experience for all ages in Ford Park. Sliding doors allow air circulation and masks are required, following safe Covid procedures. 3. New receptacles are used to make this process flawless in order to keep the cleanest stream. Local vendors are incorporated for additional needs including food, artists and services. Product buying is guided by a policy for responsible purchases. By learning about the surrounding mountain environment, participants are engaged in environmental stewardship. Carpooling, TOV and ECO buses, biking and walking are all encouraged as the best way for access to the Gardens. BFAG stays up to date on eco-friendly innovations and processes in order to implement them into programs and events. EVENT/PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS 1. Number of participants (athletes, artists, exhibitors, etc.) anticipated 26 2. Number of volunteers needed 20 3. Number of event/program staff 12 4. Estimate of total number of spectators/attendees anticipated 150,000 SCORECARD CRITERIA QUESTIONS 1. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event support the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council? The exhibit and activities meet the Town of Vail and Betty Ford Alpine Gardens' matching missions of deepening understanding of the surrounding natural environment. "Plants Are an Answer" will focus on the value plants have in absorbing and reducing greenhouse gases that affect Vail’s surrounding mountain ecosystems and other important ecoregions around the globe. 2. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event or program support Vail brand identity? Vail Brand's natural grandeur is a result of being located within mountain environments. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens' goal is to provide opportunities for visitors and community members to delve more deeply into the unique plants and animals that live in and depend on these ecosystems, including the Town of Vail. 3. EE - Potential: How will the event or program enhance Leadership Skills: locally, nationally and internationally? Multiple studies have proven that botanic gardens are a trusted source of accurate scientific information on all topics for the public, including climate change. The 2021 programs will highlight the scientific and conservation work of Vail's Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, an internationally recognized botanic garden. BFAG is a leader and author of the 2018 North American Alpine Strategy, a blueprint for protecting alpine plants and ecosystems in the U.S. and Canada. The strategy is a guide for botanic gardens worldwide to follow. Visitors and community members can become advocates for threatened ecosystems in their communities armed with accurate scientific information obtained at the exhibits and activities at BFAG. 4. EE - Potential: What opportunities does the event or program have to foster a health and wellness reputation for Vail? The Gardens provide the perfect opportunity for Vail's guests and citizens to recover from plant blindness, the lack of awareness of plants in one's own environment. Visits can help with nature-deficit disorder, the idea that human beings, especially children, are spending less time outdoors resulting in a wide range of behavioral problems, and ecophobia, a feeling of powerlessness to prevent cataclysmic environmental change. All are increasingly problematic for many people of all ages. 5. EE - Potential: How will the event or program provide opportunities for intellectual dialogues and problem solving The exhibits will include drop-in interactive activities for all ages related to a plant's ability to modify increasing carbon emissions and their effects on all ecosystems. A family discovery tour allows children and their families to work together, following clues through the Gardens to find answers to climate-related questions. An evening speaker series provides the audience an opportunity for intellectual dialog with experts in their related fields. 4. EE - Potential: How will the event or program deliver an educational component? Betty Ford Alpine Gardens programming is all about education! Through indoor and outdoor exhibits, daily drop-in interactive activities, family guided activities, discovery tours, workshops and an expert evening speaker series, visitors and community members are exposed to knowledgeable sources of information on climate change and its effects on worldwide ecosystems. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens’ 2021 Plants Are an Answer exhibit and activities will create an immersive experience that connects visitors to ways that plants and individuals can have an impact on changing climate. Presentations, workshops, activities, and a themed family scavenger hunt plus a children’s farmer’s market are available to all at no or low cost. Free, accessible, ever-changing lifelong learning opportunities are available for adults, families and children. The BFAG Visitor Center is the only actively staffed year-round facility in Ford Park. 5. EE - Event Timing: How is it the right event or program at the right time? Climate change is affecting ecosystems all over the planet. Presently, the North American alpine tundra and other mountain areas are warming at twice the rate of the rest of the planet. There is no better time to awaken awareness of the environmental changes that are affecting Vail and other communities of our visitors. Plants Are an Answer will present a positive message with action steps that can make a difference down to an individual level. 6. EE - Demographic Fit: How will your event/program attract target markets of both visitors and community members? Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is one of the few botanic gardens specializing in alpine plants and capable of growing and maintaining an internationally recognized collection of mountain plants from around the world. All exhibits, activities and events are open to visitors at no or low cost and are aimed at all age categories. Spanish translated guides of permanent exhibits and self-guided tours are available to extend ecological knowledge to Spanish-speaking visitors and community members. 7. EE - Community Enrichment: What is the lasting community involvement opportunity and/or lasting community benefit of the event or program? The goal of inspiring community members and visitors to take action to preserve all ecosystems from the effects of climate change and human encroachment is the ultimate benefit of the 2021 Plants Are an Answer programming. 8. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program deliver fresh content and enhanced experiences? There can be a general feeling of hopelessness when it comes to solutions for a changing climate due to increasing greenhouse gases. Plants Are an Answer gives positive, down to earth ways to make an impact. Many visitors and community members do not have the opportunity or are not physically able to visit different worldwide ecosystems. The all new for 2021 exhibits, speakers and activities provide solutions to greenhouse gas emissions and an awareness of unique ecoregions for the visitor. 9. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program achieve recognition and drive participation? Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is #2 on Tripadvisor's Things To Do Top Attractions in Vail behind the Booth Falls hike. The Gardens again received the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award in 2020 for consistently earning great reviews from travelers and being ranked within the top 10% of properties on the website. Visitors and community members continue to visit the Gardens and spend time in Vail because fresh, new exhibits, speakers and activities are presented each year. BFAG thanks CSE and other supporters for making this possible. 10. EE - Marketing Strength: What is the marketing reach for the event or program? (Reach refers to the total number of different people or households exposed, at least once, to a medium during a given period.) The Gardens already host over 100,000 visitors annually. Radio and print advertisement, brochures, social media blasts and weekly concierge updates are planned for the valley-wide community of 50,000. Colorado's Front Range is also a radio and print target if CSE funding is acquired to expand marketing reach. 11. EE - Marketing Strength: How will the event or program leverage media and attract donor and sponsorship support? Betty Ford Alpine Gardens will send out email newsletters and social media postings to members, donors and visitor databases, and will write and submit timely and relevant articles and press releases related to the environment, exhibits and speakers to the Vail Daily and other print and radio media. The impact and professional quality of the exhibits deepens trust for past funders and is the foundational starting point to bring new donors onboard. 12. EE - Producer Qualifications: Explain the event or program producer’s quality, knowledge and resources to sustain and grow the event. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens has been a scientific source of information and event host in the Town of Vail since 1986. EVENT ECONOMIC IMPACT 1. Additional funds will allow an expansion of projects in 2021 to answer projected visitor demand. BFAG is always grateful for the support we receive from CSE.
