EVENT DESCRIPTION
1. Is this a new or existing event/program in Vail?
Existing
1a. How many years has the event or program been produced in Vail?
49
1b. Please describe the location(s) of the event or program in previous years.
The Sebastian Vail, Four Seasons Resort Vail, The Vail Chapel, Donovan Pavilion, The Grand Hyatt Vail, Vail Public Library, The
Grand View Room.
2. Please provide a detailed description of the event/program and its activities.
We produce and present programs on a weekly and sometimes bi-weekly basis from December - April and June - October. Our
programs cover a variety of topics in the following series: Geopolitics, Health and Wellness, Hot Topics, Unlimited Adventure,
Finance, Speaking Locally, Science & Technology, Environmental Awareness, Consciousness and Arts & Culture.
Prior to the shut down in March, our programs were presented in person. After the shutdown, we immediately began offering our
programs online as Zoom webinars. We are currently planning to present our winter series online and are hopeful that our 2021
summer series can return to in-person events.
Our events may be led by a single speaker or consist of a panel of experts with a moderator. For in-person events, the typical
format is a 50-70-minute presentation by the speaker or a dialogue with the panelist, followed by 20- 30 minutes of Q&A and
dialogue with our audience. For online Zoom webinars, our programs typically run for one hour.
Some programs and super panel programs can require more than one session to cover the topic, so they may last for two hours,
or two one and a half-hour sessions. Additionally, our consciousness programs often have a more detailed workshop opportunity
taking place the following day for three to four hours. These workshops provide more depth and more interaction between our
experts and our community. When possible, we also take our speakers into the local schools to share their topic expertise and
stories with students.
For our in-person programs, our attendees gather at our simple receptions before our programs and often linger after to continue
the discussion. Many also gather around the speaker after our programs to ask additional questions. We also host post-event
receptions for donors and invited guests.
For our online programs, we typically host a second Zoom meeting event after the public program for an invited group to interact
with our speaker and others to continue the conversation.
We plan to present 20-22 programs during the winter and summer season for a total of 40-44 programs for the year. In the past,
we have scheduled most of these programs by mid-October for the winter season and mid-May for the summer season. This
timeline has been necessary to arrange for the travel schedule of our speakers and the logistics of venues, brochures, etc. In the
virtual format, we have the flexibility of confirming our programs approximately 4-6 weeks out. This flexibility not only allows us
to present the timeliest topics with speakers who are currently in the news, but we have also engaged with a broader speaker
base since they are not required to travel to share their knowledge. Some speaker highlights from this summer include Montana
State Senator Mike Phillips; Richard N. Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations; former Ambassador Michael McFaul,
currently at Stanford University and the Hoover Institute; former Governors John Kasich and Bill Richardson; Jared Bernstein,
Economic Advisor to Vice President Joe Biden, and Sarah Bloom Raskin, former deputy secretary of the US Treasury.
Our online events allow audience members from all over the country to participate. Some are part-time Vail residents and some
are new to Vail and the Vail Symposium. Most programs have people tuning in from 12-16 different states as well as from
international locations. We have received many positive comments on our audience’s ability to participate in more Symposium
programs than in the past. Additionally, all of our online programs are recorded and available for those who cannot watch them
live which expands our impact and reaches a broader audience, promoting Vail as a community engaged in ongoing education.
During the Winter 2020 season, we produced 14 in-person programs; average attendance was 173 per program (Winter 2019 -
avg. attendance 137 per program). Our initial winter season was anticipated to include 21 programs (prior to the shutdown). We
were able to live stream three of those canceled events in late March and early April.
During Summer 2020, we hosted 24 Zoom webinar programs; the average attendance was 156 per program (we attracted
attendees from more than 16 different states and several countries).
When appropriate, we partner with other organizations in our community to provide synergy, cut down on duplication of events
and maximize attendance. Recent partnerships include Vail Valley Partnership, Vail Health, Walking Mountains Science Center,
Eagle River Watershed Council, Vail Valley Art Guild, B'Nai Vail and Colorado Mountain College.
3. Please list the specific venues that you plan to utilize, including dates and times, and whether or not you have
contacted them to confirm availability. The Event Producer is responsible for booking and securing any necessary
venues.
In the past, our venues have included: The Donovan Pavilion, The Vail Chapel, The Sebastian, The Four Seasons Resort Vail and
The Grand Hyatt; we choose the appropriate venue based on projected attendance and venue availability. We will continue to
work with these partners when we return to presenting our programs in person.
For the winter season, we currently plan to present our programs online as Zoom webinars rather than in person. This is based on
current health guidelines as well as feedback from our constituents; we currently can reach a larger audience in this format. We
will evaluate in-person programs for the summer of 2021 as we have more information and will plan to work with our same venue
partners as listed above.
4. Do you plan to use Vail Recreation District Facilities?
No
5. If any of the event/program takes place outside of the Town of Vail, please explain where the event will take
place and why.
75-85% of our programs are hosted in the Town of Vail at the venues listed above. The remaining programs may be held at
locations outside of the Town of Vail for several reasons including:
* Because we produce 40-45 separate events each season, it is not possible to confirm a location in the Town of Vail for all
events.
* Colorado Mountain College is a partner and it is appropriate for us to hold some events at the Edwards Campus.
* For some of our largest events (more than 300 people), there is not currently a suitable space in the Town of Vail, particularly if
we have a
film and lecture. These are typically held at Battle Mountain High School.
* Other venues this past season included the Beaver Creek Chapel, Battle Mountain High School and the Edwards Interfaith
Chapel.
ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES
1. Which of these environmental practices will you commit to executing at your event/program?

2. Please describe your commitment to environmental sustainability and detail measures that will be taken during
your event to ensure minimal environmental impact and sustainable best practices.
We are committed to environmental sustainability and currently present four programs each year in our Environmental
Awareness Series.

SCORECARD CRITERIA QUESTIONS
1. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event support the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council?
The Vail Symposium supports the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council by presenting exceptional educational programs on
a variety of topics that are of interest to our community members and guests. These programs promote intellectual curiosity and
provide an opportunity for our community to gather, to learn and share new ideas. The weekly occurrence and format of our
programs provide an easy, on-going opportunity for our community to engage on a regular basis at an affordable price and at
events that do not require a large time commitment but provide a launching pad for further study and action.
Our educational programs provide a balance to the many cultural and outdoor activities available to our community.
2. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event or program support Vail brand identity?
The Vail brand promises “something that immediately disconnects us from our every day, while simultaneously reconnecting us
with family, friends and to parts of ourselves long forgotten. Something that reminds us of what we live for, what we work for and
what it’s like to forget everything else but the moment we’re in.”
Vail Symposium provides programming that educates audiences. Sometimes it's about topics that they’re passionate about and
sometimes we cover topics that are just beginning to pique their interest. Our programs provide insight into these topics through
presentations by experts. Guests leave with new knowledge, perspectives and--often--inspiration.
3. EE - Potential: How will the event or program enhance Leadership Skills: locally, nationally and internationally?
Our programming brings in experts to discuss a variety of topics. We partner with the Vail Valley Partnership to deliver programs
that specifically address business best practices, including leadership. Some topics from 2020 include The Costs of
Miscommunication and Strategies for Effective Communication and The Business of Connection: Skills to Cultivate Thriving
Relationships in the Workplace.
While the remainder of our programs may not always specifically discuss leadership skills, the opportunity to learn from leaders is
extensive. By attending Vail Symposium programs, audiences can learn from leaders in a wide array of fields, ranging from
finance to healthcare and topics in between.
We provide a wide spectrum of educational programs that, through interaction and conversations, create a sense of community
within a diverse group of people.
4. EE - Potential: What opportunities does the event or program have to foster a health and wellness reputation for
Vail?
Vail Symposium brings in speakers that focus on this topic for our "Health and Wellness" and "Consciousnesses" series. Our
Unlimited Adventure series programs inspire an active lifestyle through stories of adventurers breaking boundaries and
accomplishing amazing feats.
Programs and topics in the past three years have included: Beating Burnout: Using Inspiration and Empowerment to Foster
Successful Organizations; While You Are Sleeping: Your Brains Nocturnal Pursuits; The Little Fungi That Could: The Big Promise of
a Small Mushroom (on psilocybin); Medical Aid In Dying; Stress Management; Meditation; Aging Slower-Healing Faster; Affordable
Health Care in the Valley; Life after Cancer; Health Care Policy - the ACA and the Opioid Crisis; Environmedics: The Impacts of
Climate Change on Human Health; Mental Health = Essential Health; Integrative Approaches to Patient Care; Tackling Depression
and Mental Illness in Colorado and Cells to Society (a cancer panel).
5. EE - Potential: How will the event or program provide opportunities for intellectual dialogues and problem
solving
The mission of the Vail Symposium is to provide programs that are thought-provoking and diverse, covering a wide range of topics
that are of current interest. Audiences are encouraged to interact not only with speakers but also with each other during the Q&A
and following the presentation. Additionally, many programs incorporate our live polling equipment, which shows a real-time
snapshot of the audience’s opinions, leading to additional dialogue. For many of our programs, we are committed to including
solutions and providing information for further study.
4. EE - Potential: How will the event or program deliver an educational component?
Our entire mission is built upon the idea of providing educational programs to the Vail Valley community: Every program is
designed with education in mind. We hope to create dialogue and encourage a desire to learn more. Additionally, when possible,
we take our speakers into the local schools to engage and inform students. A goal for every program is that our
audience comes away learning something new or having a fuller understanding of the topic or other points of view on the topic.
5. EE - Event Timing: How is it the right event or program at the right time?
Our survey feedback indicates that the timing (6 p.m.) and duration of our programs (1-1.5 hours in person and 1 hour online),
once each week, is the sweet spot for guests to attend as many programs as they can. We present programs most weeks of the
year, providing opportunities for guests, second homeowners and locals to enjoy our programs throughout the year, not just in
peak times. Our online format makes it possible for people to participate in locations from all over the world. Additionally, all of
our online programs are recorded so they can be viewed at a later date on our website, YouTube and Facebook.
The Vail Symposium prides itself on choosing speakers and programs that are not only of interest to the community but are also
topical and timely. With our Hot Topic Series, we strive to be at the forefront of world news and events. Our Geopolitics series
also tends to be uncannily prescient, addressing issues that quickly become headline news.
6. EE - Demographic Fit: How will your event/program attract target markets of both visitors and community
members?
Our primary audience consists of residents and second homeowners, many of whom are searching for opportunities to have lively
discussions and learn about topics that are of interest to them and to the community. As we continue to provide quality
programming, the Vail Symposium can continue to attract participants who are engaged in the community, leading to an
improved economic forecast for the valley. Moving to an online format, we're also attracting potential new visitors and community
members.
7. EE - Community Enrichment: What is the lasting community involvement opportunity and/or lasting community
benefit of the event or program?
Our mission is to provide educational programs that are thought-provoking, diverse and affordable. True to that mission, over the
past decade, the Symposium has offered more educational programs to more members of our community than almost any other
organization in the valley. Our programs not only educate, but they also inspire. The Speaking Locally series connects the
audience to our community, providing information about current topics and issues and often inspires change for the greater good.
However, all of our programs strive to connect the community and provide another educational outlet for residents and second
homeowners.
8. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program deliver fresh content and enhanced experiences?
The diversity of our programs and series topics ensures that our programs are constantly changing and addressing local, regional,
national and global issues. The Vail Symposium programming committee strives to create a schedule of speakers and topics that
are timely and intriguing. We rarely repeat speakers and, if we do, it's because we're expanding a session that was of particular
interest or there is new information to share. We actively solicit feedback from audience members to continually improve and
enhance the experience.
With the pandemic, we've been able to attract speakers of an even higher caliber due to the fact that they can log in and present
from the comfort of their home or office - no travel is necessary. We're able to focus on, and deliver timely programs, on issues
that are literally front-page news.
9. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program achieve recognition and drive participation?
Our goal is not necessarily to achieve national or global recognition--our programming is designed for the Vail community.
However, due to the caliber of our speakers, many of whom are nationally recognized in their fields, we may garner national or
global recognition with some of our programming. We have seen a 100% increase in attendance over the past two years. This is
due in part to improved programming and to word-of-mouth reaction to the quality of our programs, driving others to attend.
We've only seen this word-of-mouth and "sharing" of programs increase since we went virtual during the public health orders. The
diversity of our programming attracts a variety of attendees based on the topic and our virtual programs allow us to reach an
even broader audience, not necessarily physically based in Vail.
10. EE - Marketing Strength: What is the marketing reach for the event or program? (Reach refers to the total
number of different people or households exposed, at least once, to a medium during a given period.)
Each program is different, depending on topic and presenter. However, the marketing reach for most programs averages more
than 50,000 people, per event, conservatively with print, online and social media outreach.
11. EE - Marketing Strength: How will the event or program leverage media and attract donor and sponsorship
support?
We promote each program through a variety of channels, incorporating advertising and editorial efforts with local news
organizations as well as regional outlets. Live recognition of our sponsors and underwriters at each program encourages others to
ask how they can help support the Vail Symposium. Certain programs also contain a sponsorship element with program partners
who also contribute to media exposure. Due to our move to virtual programs, we've been able to attract some additional donor
and sponsorship support.
12. EE - Producer Qualifications: Explain the event or program producer’s quality, knowledge and resources to
sustain and grow the event.
Since 1971, the Vail Symposium has been a leader in on-going education and thought leadership with a proven track record of
presenting quality programs for our community. Our excellence begins with our board of directors and our programming
committee having access and ideas about the best and most interesting speakers to share with our community. Each successful
program has a ripple effect on future programs as our speakers refer and recommend future speakers. We have established
working relationships with major think tanks and universities including Brooking's Institute, Hoover Institute, Cato Institute,
Stanford University, and others. Our advisory committee includes experts in many fields, former ambassadors and entrepreneurs.
Additionally, Executive Director Kris Sabel brings more than 35 years of experience in the performing arts to enhance the quality
of each presentation.
EVENT ECONOMIC IMPACT
1. Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - Estimate number of room nights for your event or program.
10
2. Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - Estimate increased spending
generated by your event or program.
$125
Example: Increased spend by attendees in restaurants, shops, lodging or activities.
3. Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - What estimated return on investment (ROI) in dollars should the Town of
Vail expect?
$33,000
ROI in this case refers to for each dollar the event/program is funded, how many dollars will be received by the Town of Vail from event impact.)
Example: Estimated ROI - Formula: # of attendees x total average spending = $ (2000 attendees) x ($240 daily spend ) = $480,000
4. Explanation of how you will direct prospective attendees to book lodging within the Town of Vail and a
description of how you will track the number of lodging nights generated. REMINDER: Per the CSE funding
agreement, the event producer is REQUIRED to direct attendees to book in Town of Vail hotels and lodges.
Our primary lodging partners are The Antlers at Vail and The Grand Hyatt. We encourage out of town guests to stay in town and
specifically direct them to these properties offering discounted rates for program attendees. As an "Educational and Enrichment
Program," our mission does not specifically drive heads to bed, but it does provide programming for those who live and work
here, as well as to guests visiting Vail; enhancing the quality of life and guest experience. We cull information from our online
ticketing program as well as from the End of Year Surveys conducted by the Town of Vail, CSE and by Vail Symposium.
BUDGET
Using the provided budget template, provide a detailed estimated event/program budget, including anticipated revenues and expenses.
1. Describe how you will use the funds requested from the CSE.
The funds received from the CSE are used throughout the year for our general operating expenses. Our online programs are
offered at no cost so the funds for the current year will help offset ticketing income as well.
2. Please upload the provided complete event/program budget template here.
2021 Event Budget Template FINAL (2).xlsx
3. What percentage % of the total event/program budget is the CSE being asked to fund?
7
4. If the event/program is not funded at full request, how will the event change with a lower funding allocation?
The Vail Symposium is highly dependent on CSE funding along with donor and sponsor funding to fulfill its mission. Reduced
funding will make it more challenging for our small staff to implement and execute all of the events at a high level, as well as
cultivate and steward donors. In the short term, a reduction in funding would not alter the planned activity for this winter as we
are already in negotiations with our speakers for specific programs and dates. In the longer term, if TOV CSE funding is not
available, we will have to evaluate and look for other sources of income and perhaps have more programs outside of the Town of
Vail when we resume in-person events.
5. Should the CSE decide not to support this event/program at all, will it still occur?
Yes
6.What dollar amount of the total event/program revenue do you expect the event itself to generate? (ticket sales,
merchandise, food and alcohol sales, etc.)
25,000
7. Do you intend to host the event or program in Vail beyond 2021?
Yes
7a. How many years beyond 2021?
4+
7b. Do you anticipate requesting funding from the CSE for 2022?
Yes
MARKETING
Please upload your event/program marketing plan and budget, include strategy, channel, method, budget and
execution dates.
2020-21 Vail Symposium Marketing Plan.docx
1. Objectives: What are you trying to accomplish through your marketing efforts?
Our overall marketing goal is to share the mission of the Vail Symposium, attract new audience members to our programs and
continue to draw the interest of our current audience. Our target audience is residents and second homeowners, but our
marketing is designed to reach people throughout the valley and in the state, regardless of their residential status. With the
advent of online-accessible programming, we're looking to expand our audience and bring the rest of the country to Vail.
2. Strategy: How will you meet your objectives?
We will meet our objectives through a combination of marketing and public relations efforts that span all avenues of
communication, including traditional media such as print and television as well as social media channels. Our email marketing is
particularly effective, with a more than 25% open rate and a 7% click to open rate. We also form partnerships to share news of
our programming with other groups and organizations in the valley and beyond, when appropriate. We are constantly evaluating
our efficacy and looking for new ways to promote our mission and programs.
3. Audience: Who is your audience? (You may choose more than one.)
First time visitors, Returning guests, Primary and Second Homeowners, Local residents
4. Activation: Detail in town/in village activation opportunities to promote your event or program. (Definition of
Activation: Create an expanded presence throughout the community and stimulate the participation of the
merchants, restaurants, bars and lodges.)
Previously, we shared our seasonal brochures with concierges as well as distributed these brochures to different businesses
around the valley. Now, we're ensuring that local concierges are on our email list to keep up-to-date with upcoming programs. We
also actively market our programs to guests at our host hotels. Depending on the programs, we also engage partners who have
an interest in a certain speaker or program to help spread the word. For example, for our program on Alzheimer's, we reached out
to the medical centers, various health groups and support groups in the valley.
5. Channels: Which of these channels will you utilize to promote your event or program? (You may select more than
one.)
Print - Local, Editorial, Online Event Listings, E-newsletters, Web, Media Plan/Public Relations, Grassroots, Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, Flyers, Signage – Banners, etc, Co-promotions, Partnerships, Local Vail Businesses

SPONSORSHIPS & PARTNERSHIPS
1. What is the dollar $ amount of sponsorships and/or partnerships from other sources reflected in the
event/program budget?
$373,000
1a. What is the dollar $ amount of in-kind services or items provided from sponsors or partners?
$91,000
2. Please list your confirmed sponsors or partners.
Prior to the pandemic our in-kind contributions were valued at $180,000. That number is currently reduced since we are not using
meeting space or lodging for our events and speakers for the winter season. The estimated value for in-kind for 2021 is $91,000.
Our business partners for in-kind contributions include:
The Antlers at Vail
The Vail Daily
Vail Resorts Epic Promise
The Grand Hyatt
The Four Seasons, Vail
Wyndham Resort Properties
Colorado Mountain College
Epic Mountain Express
The Sebastian - Vail
Battle Mountain High School

Venture Sports
Phil Hoversten
Key Grants and Foundations: $105,500. This number does not include CSE funding.
Frechette Family Foundation
Alpine Bank
National Endowment for the Humanities
Colorado Humanities
Slifer Smith and Fampton Foundation
The Majority of our funding comes from individual donors. The budgeted amount is $248,000.
Key Donors: ($5,000 and above)
Dale and Jeanne Mosier
Cindy Engles
Kathy and Neal Kimmel
Holly and Buck Elliott
Amy and Jay Regan
Brian Stockmar
Diamond-Bross Charitable Fund
Dierdre and Ronnie Baker
Doris Dewton
Dr. Robert and Janie Lippnick
Leila and Walt Mischer
Laura Tumperi
Agnes and Oscar Tang
3. Please explain the potential for additional sponsorships or partners.
The largest area of income growth for the Vail Symposium is individual donor contributions. As the quality and consistency of our
programs grows, we are seeing an increase in attendance and donor support. We have more than doubled our individual donor
support in the last two years.
Major corporate sponsorship is not a likely source of income for the Vail Symposium as our audience market share does not meet
those requirements for most corporate giving. There is some potential room for growth from local sponsors, mainly community
grants from banks, etc.
4. Please upload your sponsorships/partnerships presentation, pitch deck or letter. (Document sent to prospective
partners or sponsors which provides benefits for participating in your event/program.)

2d. Do you need to add a second set of dates for the Donovan Pavilion?
2g. If your request for Donovan Pavilion is for more than 2 days, please list out your other requested dates in this
format, MM/DD.
We request up to 10 single dates for the Donovan Pavilion, Mondays through Thursdays. We will work with the management team
at the Donovan Pavilion to confirm available dates.
It is unlikely we will use all of these dates but as we are presenting 40 plus programs each year, we like to have options as we
work with all of our venue partners to find the best venue for each program.
In the past, we also used the Grand View but our events attendance is now too large for this space. In 2019 we used the Donovan
Pavilion five times. In 2020 we used the Donovan one time and one event was canceled due to the pandemic.
2h. Please describe proposed use of Donovan Pavilion facility.
See our descriptions of our programs question #2 above.
We typically set up 150-220 seats, theater-style, with a screen and projector. We use one or two tables for a small, pre-reception
with food and sometimes also provide a bar as an amenity for our guests. When we have a bar we only serve alcohol for 30
minutes during the pre-reception: typically 4-6 bottles of wine and 12 beers per event. We typically only need use of the venue
for 4-6 hours per event and for one day at a time.
2i. Total in-kind value for Donovan Pavilion rental

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there any questions you have for the CSE or other things you'd like to share with the board that are not
included in the application?
The Vail Symposium is appreciative of the ongoing support the Town of Vail has shown through the years. We are proud to be a
part of the community and are committed to our mission. In reviewing our application, please consider that The Vail Symposium
does not fit as an event but as a year-round operation. As a result, we consider the CSE funding as a key sponsor for everything
we do--we recognize the Town of Vail at all of our events and for everything we are able to accomplish.
The direct economic impact is challenging to quantify as we have discussed in previous application presentations and in our
recap presentations. The majority of our guests are local: On any given program, they may have dinner or drinks and pay for
parking. We encourage them to do so at our partner locations in their email and ticketing confirmations. But, because they are
local, they spend money in Vail at times not specific to our events when they ski, shop, go out to dinner activities, etc.
The ROI to the Town of Vail is more intangible. Our programs create a sense of community, an opportunity to gather with others
and learn; we make Vail a more complete community. As a result, the ROI is measured more by how people feel about their
community as a place they want to live, raise their families and encourage their friends to visit. In our virtual format, we are
reaching a broader audience from around the country and world but our programs continue to make Vail a community and not
just a resort town.
Our events offer an important, additive component to the balance and culture of our community. Providing opportunities for our
community to come together to learn, share and stimulate our minds is an honor and a responsibility that our board, donors, and
audiences are dedicated to. Our primary audience is locals and second homeowners aged 16-90. They are students, workers and
retired members of our community who have a desire to learn and engage in meaningful discussion on a variety of topics. We
provide a wide spectrum of educational programs that, through interaction and conversations, create a sense of community
within a diverse group of people. We're also very proud of the fact that we pivoted quickly with the advent of the pandemic and
public health orders and were able to salvage the end of our winter season and deliver an uncompromised summer season of
programming.
Thank You.

2020-21 Vail Symposium Marketing Plan
Sept. 24, 2020
The Vail Symposium would allocate funding from the TOV to fulfill the following marketing and
communications efforts of the organization:
Running ads in the Vail Daily 150 of 365 days a year (one unique ad running three days in the
lead up to each event for approximately 50 events).
Inclusion in the Vail Daily’s annual GIVE magazine.
Submitting 50+ unique press releases to the Symposium’s media list. Fulfilling media requests
and pitching story ideas, especially in light of the Vail Symposium’s upcoming 50th anniversary.
Social media: Increase social presence on Facebook through partnerships and paid promotion
for event. We’re increasing our paid ads on Facebook to supplement our organic reach. We’re
also utilizing Instagram account to help target and appeal to more expanded audience.
Online calendars: Vail Symposium ensures that we are included in as many local calendars as
possible including Facebook events, Vail Daily, Vail Valley Partnership, Swift publications, etc.
Print
Biannual Brochure*
The Vail Symposium has a program brochure produced twice each year. The brochure features program
descriptions, donation information, season recaps, letters from the board chair and program committee
chair, a volunteer spotlight, advertisements from businesses or organizations that support the
Symposium and other information for the community.
12,000 brochures printed
10,000 brochures mailed directly to Vail Symposium supporters and delivered directly to Vail
and Edwards Post Office boxes
Distribution at all programs
Distribution to concierges at strategic locations
Distributed to Vail Welcome Center
*Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the suspension of our in-person events, we are opting to refrain
from printing our winter brochure and will utilize our new website, email platform and social media for
sharing the season line-up. Depending on public health orders, we may choose to create a Summer 2021
brochure.
Vail Daily
15,000+ circulation daily newspaper with 300 strategically placed pickup locations in the community and
resort locations resulting in 91% penetration in Eagle County. In 2020-21, the Vail Symposium plans to
release in the Vail Daily:
Season release articles in Winter and Spring
50+ press releases submitted as unique content for each program typically featured in the Vail
Daily and Vail Daily online.
Letters from the Board of Directors Chair, Dale Mosier, as appropriate.
Work with the A&E editor to assign additional stories based on Symposium events (including
stories covering the event).
One ad, typically running continuously from three days before an event until event date, totaling
50 unique ads appearing 150 days in the Vail Daily.
Inclusion in the weekly calendar of events.
The Vail Symposium also participates in the annual “GIVE” magazine. 40,000 copies of GIVE are
printed; the Vail Symposium has a one-page promotion of the organization and our upcoming
programs.
Editorial
Vail Symposium also pitches stories to local media such as Vail Valley Magazine and other Vail
Valley neighborhood publications.
Other editorial opportunities include front-range publications such as Denver Post, CPR and
Colorado Sun.
Digital
Email marketing
Vail Symposium currently has a database of more than 5,000 contacts that receive our weekly
newsletter and reminders for upcoming programs. Our emails perform above the average for general
emails: We have a 25% open rate and an average 7% click to open rate.
Though it’s difficult to correlate all types of outreach directly to sales, we see a consistent spike in tickets
sales directly following the email distribution. Thus, this remains one of our most important ways that
we communicate.
Social media
Facebook
Facebook continues to be an incredibly useful and informative tool for publicizing Vail Symposium
events. The Symposium Facebook page has almost 1,600 followers. Organic posts usually reach 900 or
more people in one week, resulting in 50 post engagements. Programs that are boosted also receive
strong engagement, reaching more than 1,000 people in 4 or 5 days leading up to the event and
receiving nearly 180 post engagements. Our goal is to increase our reach by 5% in the next year.
In 2020, the Vail Symposium plans to:
Continue expanding Facebook engagement with posts and strategic promotions that both
promote the organization’s page as well as boosts ticket sales for particular events.
Continue to utilize the target marketing tool to increase awareness and drive event traffic
Target particular age groups to continue our success in attracting a super boomer audience as
well as targeting millennial achievers.
Collaborate with other groups in the valley, like the Vail Valley Partnership, Walking Mountains,
Bookworm Edwards and B’Nai Vail to cross-promote events where we see synergies.
Engage with users to increase community reception and appeals
Continue to post our program videos on Facebook
Consider the possibility of conducting more programs through Facebook Live based on the
success of our late-season forays into this medium due to the Coronavirus.
Instagram
The Vail Symposium also created an Instagram account is actively curating an account that showcases
the programs that we present as well as drawing on the history of our organization to interact with our
audience in a new way. We have grown that audience to more than 670 followers and utilize the
#fortheloveoflearning on each post. Though it’s not as robust as Facebook, it’s growing and it another
avenue with which to engage with our audience and potential attendees. Our goal is a 10% increase
over the next year.
YouTube
Previously, though the Vail Symposium has a robust library of programming, we hadn’t taken the steps
to utilize and boost our presence on YouTube. This year, with our programming going digital, we’ve
been utilizing YouTube to increase our SEO, extend our Vail Symposium audience engagement and find
new audience members. We’ve establish a benchmark and have a goal of a 10% increase of views over
the next year.
Other Media
Television
With the dissolution of TV8, our television outreach has been curtailed. However, we’re also working
with High 5 Media to increase the reach of our video programming. Through this partnership we plan to
reach a new audience while providing another avenue for our current audience to enjoy our
programming.
Grassroots
Partnerships
The Vail Symposium has been working on expanding our network within the community, leveraging
relationships where there is cross-over in terms of focus. In addition to working with concierges in hotels
to distribute our information for inclusion in guest communications and suggesting programs when
guests inquire about things to do, we will continue to work with other non-profit and for-profit
organizations to ensure their members are aware of programs of interest. We have worked on
identifying various community groups to ensure that they are aware of, and are sharing information
about, our programming (for example, distributing information about health programs through Vail
Health; partnering with Walking Mountains for our environmentally-focused programs; partnering with
B’Nai Vail, etc.). We will continue to collaborate with other public relations entities, like Vail Resorts and
the Vail Local Marketing District, to ensure that our programming is top of mind for visiting media and
messaging.

For more than a hundred years, the Maya have captured
the popular imagination and cultivated scholarly curiosity.
Known for their imposing architecture, hieroglyphic writing
and sophisticated calendar, the Maya were among only a
handful of groups independently to develop agriculture,
establish large sedentary centers and develop socially
complex hierarchical societies.
Too often, however, contemporary Maya peoples have little
or no say in how Maya history is studied, how it is
described in magazines and textbooks, or how it is
presented to tourists, including the millions who visit
Cancun and the Maya Riviera each year. Nor do Maya
peoples usually benefit financially from the lucrative
tourism industry that is focused, in significant part, on Maya
culture.
This presentation will consider how archaeologists can
work with and for marginalized groups who want to tell their
own stories and benefit from their own histories.
Specifically, this presentation will take as its case study
Punta Laguna: a contemporary community, Maya-led
ecotourist attraction, spider monkey reserve and
archaeological site located in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

For decades, the fight for the American West has
fascinated writers and readers alike. The mystery of Lt.
Col. George A. Custer ’s death, the lives of Sitting Bull and
Crazy Horse and the catastrophe at Wounded Knee have
been too powerful to resist. Yet it turns out that the United
States Army’s unpublished manuscript correspondence –
hidden away in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
– radically changes what we think about the era.
This lecture will explore the misguided notion of those so-
called Indian Wars, the forgotten peers of Sitting Bull and
Crazy Horse and why Custer still looms large in popular
memory.

Vail Symposium hosts ‘After the Virus’ economic session
Jared Bernstein, Vice President Joe Biden's Economic Policy Adviser, speaks during the daily briefing, Monday, June 8, 2009, at the White House in Washington.
Haraz N. Ghanbari | AP
A second-quarter 2020 gross domestic product contraction of 32.9%, the steepest
since World War II, provided a stark number for what many are already experiencing
— the toughest economic times for most Americans in living memory.
COVID-19 will not last forever, nor will the current economic crisis. However, the
economy of the future will be different. The pandemic and ensuing economic shock
will accelerate trends already underway in the global economy. This is especially true
of the digital economy, with the rise of digital behavior such as remote working and
learning, telemedicine and delivery services. With the ampli cation of these trends,
the realities of this crisis have triggered reconsideration of several beliefs with
possible effects on long-term choices for the economy and society.
The Vail Symposium on Thursday presents a virtual panel discussion as part of its Financial Series with experts including Jared
Bernstein, Sarah Bloom Raskin and David Seigel. The discussion will cover the future of the trade war with China; the magnitude of
rescue packages and the new debt levels and the impacts on interest rates and federal policy.
At the end of the program, attendees will have a better understanding of not only what is currently happening, but insight into how
we, as a country, will move forward.
This Zoom webinar is free, but attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Vail Symposium has produced 15 virtual programs
since the public health order restricted events; the organization plans to continue offering virtual programs until it is safe to gather
together again.
