Vail offers a wide variety of programs within the Town of Vail:
• Vail Chapel Concert Series
These free, hour-long chamber concerts are performed by Festival artists at the Vail Chapel every Tuesday and Thursday during
the season. Each summer, more than 1,000 attendees (near maximum capacity of the Vail Chapel for each concert) enjoy
chamber masterpieces by Bartók, Haydn, Dvořák, Bach, Debussy, Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, Shostakovich, and Ravel,
intermingled with modern compositions by the likes of Osvaldo Golijov, Daniel Nelson, Michael Gilbertson, Martin Lohse, and
more, performed by such ensembles as Omer String Quartet, Verona Quartet, members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and
Asphalt Orchestra, all for free.
• Inside the Music
Offered three to four times throughout the summer at the Vail Interfaith Chapel, audiences gain astounding insight and unique
perspective during these free, informative talks and Master Classes. First introduced in 2019, approximately 400 attendees
experienced the first-ever series. In 2020, the series went virtual in response to COVID-19 and featured pianist Anne-Marie
McDermott, Dover Quartet, violinist Ida Kavafian and the Neubauer Family giving viewers an intimate look into their lives and
perspective on music making. These four episodes have had nearly 5,000 views.
• Pre-Concert Talks
This is a series of free talks led by renowned musicologists and members of the orchestras designed to enhance the concert
experience and create deeper connections to the evening’s program. Talks include fun facts about a composer’s life, explore
symphonic structure, and examine the story behind innovative works. In response to the incredible success and reception of these
talks, with approximately 700 attendees in 2019, Bravo! Vail continues to expand the number offered, including presenting talks
prior to chamber performances music concerts at Donovan Pavilion.
• Instrument Petting Zoos
An integral part of Bravo! Vail’s programming for children, Instrument Petting Zoos provide a fun atmosphere to interact with an
array of musical instruments. Kids are encouraged to touch, hold, play and explore making their own music. Instrument Petting
Zoos are presented in conjunction with Little Listeners @ the Library.
• Little Listeners @ the Library
In partnership with the Vail Public Library’s summer program, Little Listeners @ the Library are free, fun and informative
performances for children of all ages, but particularly geared toward ages 3 through 7, which explore a musical idea or term with
performing artists. Programs in Vail are the most popular of the series, with an average of 50 attendees at each of the two events.
• Music Box
In an exciting innovation, Bravo! Vail's Music Box, a custom-built mobile performance stage, was introduced in 2020 in response
to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Music Box brings chamber music to outdoor locations and allows Bravo! Vail to broader
audiences. The Music Box can be brought to different locations, allowing Bravo! Vail to bring the concert experience to homes,
businesses, parks and other locations. The Music Box helped to enrich the community through the power of live music during
difficult times and will continue to expand its impact in 2021 and beyond.
• After-School Piano Program
Bravo! Vail has been operating its After-School Piano Program, its flagship academic year education program, since the 2008-
2009 academic year. The After-School Piano Program aims to provide the highest quality music education with hands-on,
engaging, and energizing teachings that is affordable and accessible. Red Sandstone Elementary students are introduced to the
fundamentals of instrument training, music concepts, performance skills and reading music. Up to 20 students annually partake in
instruction at Red Sandstone Elementary.
• Summer Intensive
As a compliment to the After-School Piano Program, the Summer Intensive held at Red Sandstone Elementary offers the most
advanced young piano players, as well as students from the After-School Violin Program from locations across Eagle County, the
opportunity to continue their education during the summer with a four-day camp at which they prepare solo works, chamber
music, and compose a short piece to be performed on the final day. Students also attend an orchestra rehearsal, meet and learn
from performing artists, and receive complimentary tickets to attend a Bravo! Vail concert as a group.
• Free Concerts at Vail Health
Bravo! Vail’s partnership with Vail Health brings orchestra members to Vail Health’s medical center to perform for patients,
families and staff each year. Musicians perform in the lobby for doctors, nurses, staff, and visitors, as well as mini performances
in individual patients’ rooms. Music has proven benefits, with the healing power of music beneficial to both patients and staff. This
program breaks down barriers that prevent people from accessing the benefits of live music.
Bravo! Vail’s Education and Engagement Programs continue to grow and engage new audiences every year. These programs
reach between 3,000 and 4,000 adults and youth annually at an average of 25 events within the Town of Vail.
Each year, Bravo! Vail receives tremendous feedback from Education and Engagement Program attendees:
“My children are able to attend these incredible concerts, meet accomplished musicians, touch and play violins, cellos, trumpets
and drums and learn to play the piano with the help of Bravo! They are inspired to try things that may have otherwise been
unattainable and get access to the support they need to do so.”
“I am truly grateful for the opportunities that Bravo! Vail has afforded my family and myself.”
“Words really can't express how much I appreciate your profound influence on our community in general, but on my family and
me more specifically.”

1. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event support the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council?
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs support the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council by providing a
multitude of cultural educational events of the highest quality and providing access to visitors and locals free of charge at very
low cost. These programs contribute to a vibrant arts community within the Town of Vail, inspire musical curiosity, remove access
barriers and create a meaningful connections with music and the arts. As stewards of exceptional orchestral and chamber music
in the Vail Valley, Bravo! Vail continues that tradition of providing the very best Education and Engagement Programs to youth
and adults. Bravo! Vail has proven to be an economic driver in Vail while enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors
alike.
2. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event or program support Vail brand identity?
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs support the Vail brand identity by providing once-in-a-lifetime experiences,
providing access to artists of international renown, and increasing the town's prominence as a summer destination for cultural
visitors. Bravo! Vail is a cultural leader in the field and brings prominence to the Vail brand by maintaining a high level of artistic
excellence. Bravo! Vail seeks to create unique and diverse arts experiences of a wide variety for visitors and locals.
3. EE - Potential: How will the event or program enhance Leadership Skills: locally, nationally and internationally?
One of the key components of Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs is professional development. Each summer,
Bravo! Vail welcomes two Chamber Musicians in Residence ensembles and two Piano Fellows. The Chamber Musicians in
Residence Program showcases outstanding chamber ensembles in the early stages of major professional careers. These
musicians benefit immeasurably by performing, teaching, and learning throughout the Vail community, in concert and
collaboration with Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott and other renowned Festival musicians. The Piano Fellows are
personally selected by McDermott to spend an immersive two weeks at Bravo! Vail, performing throughout the Vail Valley in
varied programs for diverse audiences with the esteemed Festival musicians. These young musicians from across the United
States and world gain invaluable hands-on training and performance skills at many Education and Engagement Programs.
Bravo! Vail's Internship Program recruits students from around the country poised to begin careers in arts administration and non-
profit management to earn a glimpse into the inner-workings of one of the most successful classical music festivals in the country.
Each summer, students are involved and work in development and events, marketing, education, operations, and sound
engineering. Due to the ever-expanding needs of the Festival, the internship program has also increased in recent years, offering
more young professionals the opportunity to work for a world-class arts organization.
4. EE - Potential: What opportunities does the event or program have to foster a health and wellness reputation for
Vail?
Numerous research has shown the variety of health and wellness benefits of music, including reducing stress, pain and anxiety,
elevating mood, engaging the brain, and improved cognitive performance. According the a Harvard Medical School publication,
music has a role "in lifting the mood of people with depressive illnesses" and may "help the heart and circulation as well as the
brain and mind" (https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/music-and-health). Furthermore, according to a Penn State
study, music education programs create a positive peer-to-peer environment which has been shown to decrease behavior
problems (i.e. drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, shoplifting and damaging property) amongst children. Finally, in a 2012
National Endowment for the Arts study, researchers found “students who have arts-rich experiences do better across-the-board
academically, and they also become more active and engaged citizens, voting, volunteering, and generally participating at higher
rates than their peers.”
5. EE - Potential: How will the event or program provide opportunities for intellectual dialogues and problem
solving
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs deliver opportunities for intellectual dialogue and problem solving by
encouraging attendees to create, explore, and experience the arts, music and instruments in new and unique ways or for the first
time. Attendees may be exposed to music that is new to them (or more contemporary works that stretch beyond the classics),
may encounter challenges to their understanding of chamber music, and are provided the opportunity to experience new artists.
In addition, musicians have the opportunity to share their musical journeys and passion, musicologists provide insight into the
music and composers, and artistic dialogue is created between various artists collaborating together and mentoring each other.
These programs additionally provide a platform to address a gap in and further music education in the community. As music
education in schools continues to face funding challenges, Bravo! Vail works to supplement these programs with engaging and
high-quality offerings.
4. EE - Potential: How will the event or program deliver an educational component?
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs inherently deliver an abundance of educational components for the local
community, visitors, and musicians alike. Several programs are built upon mentorship or teaching, including the After-School
Piano Program which instructs students in piano play; Chamber Musicians in Residence and Piano Fellows Programs, which
provide young musicians the opportunity to learn from other artists; and the Internship Program, which provides college and
graduate school students with experience in arts administration and non-profit management. Pre-Concert Talks provide attendees
insight into the history of composers and works, an understanding of musical themes and an exploration of symphonic structure.
Furthermore, Instrument Petting Zoos and Little Listeners allows even the youngest music lover to interact with musicians and
participate in hands-on experimentation with instruments.
5. EE - Event Timing: How is it the right event or program at the right time?
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs are offered at various times throughout the day and the week and extend
throughout the year. Many of the programs are offered in the middle of the day during the summer when there traditionally are no
other cultural activities available. Program scheduling also encourages attendees to spend time in the village before and after
events. These programs are also especially relevant as the right event at the right time in the current environment, as many of
them are able to adjust to health guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including going virtual. In the summer of 2020,
many of these programs went virtual via live steam, which can be accomplished from locations throughout Vail, and the Music
Box can bring concerts directly to the community in a multitude of locations while maintaining the safety and health of musicians,
staff and attendees.
6. EE - Demographic Fit: How will your event/program attract target markets of both visitors and community
members?
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs attract target markets of both visitors and community members through a
wide range of promotion opportunities. Education and Engagement Programs are promoted in the Vail Daily, online and via social
media outlets, in brochures at strategic locations in the Vail Valley and Town of Vail, signage, e-blasts, and direct mail. The Bravo!
Vail staff and box office also directs inquiries to these programs as alternatives to paid concerts at the Gerald R. Ford
Amphitheater or Donovan Pavilion. Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs are not targeted to any specific population
or demographic and are offered for free or at low cost to encourage all to attend. Many programs are also conducive to
encouraging walk up attendance given their public locations.
7. EE - Community Enrichment: What is the lasting community involvement opportunity and/or lasting community
benefit of the event or program?
A lasting community benefit of Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs is the delivery of enriching cultural and
education experiences in the town for 2021 and beyond. There is a demonstrated need to fill a gap in free or low cost musical
education and performances for community members and visitors. According to an Amati Foundation report, “ticket cost is the
largest determining factor in orchestral event attendance.” Furthermore, their research showed unfamiliarity with a musician or
music, as well as a belief that orchestral events are reserved for the “cultural elite”, as major factors in keeping people from
attending a concert (http://www.amatifoundation.org/images/What_Do_People_Really_Think_About_Orchestras_0206_PDF.pdf).
Bravo! Vail similarly sees and hears these points made by community members and along side the documented long-term
benefits, views these factors as another reason to provide such programs. Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs
focus on reaching populations who might not otherwise have such opportunities which has a lasting impact.
8. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program deliver fresh content and enhanced experiences?
Bravo! Vail's strategic plan directs the organization on the implementation and assessment of programs to ensure a healthy
infrastructure that supports sustainability, relevance, growth and excellence. The plan outlines a refocus on Education and
Engagement Programs as one of its three primary initiatives, and it is also one of the four pillars of Anne-Marie McDermott’s
artistic vision. The Festival’s mission statement makes a clear commitment to such programs, so the Festival is dedicated to the
continued growth, improvement, evolution and expansion of Education and Community Engagement. Each summer, innovative
new programs are added, such as the Music Box in 2020, and current programs are evaluated for improvements and growth
opportunities based on community feedback and potential partnerships such as integrating Little Listeners @ the Library into the
library's summer program offerings. The primary goal of this work is the creation of meaningful links and resonance between
stakeholders over the course of the entire year. Each summer, Bravo! Vail also brings diverse and different musicians, repertoire
and artistic insight to its programs to keep them fresh.
9. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program achieve recognition and drive participation?
Bravo! Vail's Education and Engagement Programs will achieve recognition by offering unique and diverse programs that are not
found elsewhere and being at the forefront for community engagement and music education in the arts community. Through its
creative thinking and imagining of new initiatives, Bravo! Vail achieves recognition throughout the arts community as a world-
class festival of the highest artistic quality and as a leader of what is possible in the arts world. Bravo! Vail's Music Box, introduced
in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, brought critical acclaim for the Festival and nationwide recognition (see
attachment for more). Participation will be driven through increased awareness, rebranding and marketing strategies.
10. EE - Marketing Strength: What is the marketing reach for the event or program? (Reach refers to the total
number of different people or households exposed, at least once, to a medium during a given period.)
Bravo! Vail's total marketing reach is anticipated to be more than 3 million. In town signage and bus advertising would have the
greatest reach, reaching locals and visitors in the town in winter and summer. Data-driven digital advertising and behavioral
retargeting are a key component of Bravo! Vail's marketing strategy, reaching more than 200,000. In addition print advertising is
anticipated to reach 13,000 while direct marketing of mail and email are anticipation to reach up to 40,000.
11. EE - Marketing Strength: How will the event or program leverage media and attract donor and sponsorship
support?
Bravo! Vail has engaged public relations firm 8VA Music Consultancy since 2019 to increase its media coverage regionally,
nationally and internationally. This media coverage is utilized to show prospective donors and corporate sponsors the Festival's
reach and impact. As the Festival diversifies its programming, audiences and brand awareness, media coverage helps Bravo! Vail
tell its story to a broader audience and potential donors.
12. EE - Producer Qualifications: Explain the event or program producer’s quality, knowledge and resources to
sustain and grow the event.
Bravo! Vail has 33 years of knowledge and experience in event production and education programming. Since its beginning, the
Festival has evolved from a small chamber music series to an international music festival with dozens of performances
throughout the Vail Valley, and is now the summer home for some of the world’s greatest musicians and orchestras. Bravo! Vail
has a proven track record of producing high-quality events and balancing sustainability with growth. As a fixture of the
community, Bravo! Vail has strong relationships and partnerships with local businesses and organizations, as well as being a part
of numerous networks of arts and nonprofit organizations nationally, which provide resources, consultation and other services.

BRAVO! VAIL’S HISTORY
MAIN 970.827.5700 | BOX OFFICE 877.812.5700 | FAX 970.827.5707 | 2271 N Frontage Rd W, Suite C, Vail, CO 81657 | Bravovail.org ZACH MAHONEIn 1987, founding executive director John Giovando and
founding artistic director Ida Kavafian established Bravo!
Vail as public 501 (c) 3 Colorado non-profit corporation.
Since then, Bravo! Vail has evolved from a small chamber
music series to an international music festival with dozens
of performances throughout the Vail Valley, and summer
home to the world’s greatest musicians and orchestras.
Bravo! Vail has proven to be an economic driver in Vail
while enhancing the quality of life for residents and
visitors alike.
The first orchestras to be added to Bravo! Vail’s music
series were the National Repertory Orchestra and the
Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1989, the
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra brought national
recognition to Bravo! Vail with a summer residency
that lasted for 19 years. In 1995, the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra joined what would eventually become an
international roster of orchestras.
Eugenia Zukerman joined Bravo! Vail as artistic director
in 1998. The following year, the Dallas Symphony
Orchestra was added to the orchestral line-up. With a
clear vision to become the most renowned orchestral
festival in the country, Bravo! Vail celebrated the arrival of
the New York Philharmonic in 2003 and The Philadelphia
Orchestra four years later which solidified the Festival’s
reputation as one of the leading classical music festivals
in the world.
In 2011, pianist Anne-Marie McDermott became the third
artistic director in Bravo! Vail’s history. Ms. McDermott
brings fresh perspective and a return to Bravo! Vail’s
chamber music roots, working tirelessly to assemble
exceptional music-making that includes an eclectic
combination of classical favorites and new works, a great
deal of fun, and an environment that is inclusive, friendly,
and accessible to all audiences.
London’s acclaimed Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
was added to the orchestral roster in 2016, making Bravo!
Vail a four-orchestra festival. The addition of the Academy
signified a new era for Bravo! Vail—representing both
the first international and the first chamber orchestra
residency in Bravo’s history—which solidified the current
format of four top-tier resident orchestras interwoven
with a world class chamber music series. In 2019, the
Chamber Orchestra Vienna – Berlin filled this fourth
slot, opening the Bravo! Vail season in their North
American debut. 2020 will see Chamber Orchestra of
Europe join this list of venerable chamber orchestras.
In 2018, Bravo! Vail welcomed the return of Caitlin
Murray as Executive Director. Ms. Murray brings
comprehensive experience to Bravo! Vail after working
for the organization in various roles from 2009, most
recently serving as the Vice President of Development.
Ms. Murray is committed to the artistic excellence and
mission of Bravo! Vail.
Through extraordinary performances, dedicated
leadership, and generous support from the community,
Bravo! Vail has grown from a handful of attendees to one
of the world’s premier music festivals. During the summer
months, Bravo! Vail touches the lives of thousands of
people, both residents and seasonal visitors who come
to the area specifically to hear beautiful music in the
majestic Rocky Mountains.

•As the long-term reality of sheltering at home sank in, Anne-Marie McDermott found herself
struggling. She turned to music and found new life and meaning in a piece she was intimately
familiar with, Bach's Goldberg Variations. It became a way to soothe her soul during the
difficult days at home in New York City. As the months passed, she began to look at her
conflicting emotions and sought out music that could speak to the solitary nature of her
experience. Her choice of the Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues acts like a mirror to what she
was feeling, running the gamut of emotions, and helping her understanding more profoundly
just how important music is in our lives. Her story is captivating.

•The Dover Quartet long had in its schedule the epic task of recording perhaps the most
important body of work in the string quartet repertory: the complete Beethoven String
Quartets. Quarantine posed the question of whether sessions should still happen. Bravo! Vail's
invitation to play live concerts presented an answer. The first piece they played together upon
reuniting was Beethoven String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat major, Op. 74 "Harp". They discovered
it was a meaningful metaphor for this time. Listen to their reflections on how the global
pandemic has impacted them as individuals and as an ensemble, and performances of

•Over a year ago, Bravo! Vail's Founding Artistic Director Ida Kavafian invited long -time friend,
colleague, and current Bravo! Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott to perform all of
Beethoven's Sonatas for violin and piano in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their experience with this
profound musical journey inspired them to plan performances for Bravo! Vail audiences as the
Immersive Experiences series. Listen as they discuss the music, their friendship, and how
Beethoven is able to address a deep range of human emotions through the cycle of the
sonatas. They mutually chose Violin Sonata No. 9 in A major, Op.47 "Kreutzer" as the one that
encapsulates everything as a complete musical statement unto itself. They perform the second
movement in the beautiful short film.

•Monday August 3 –Inside the Music Episode 4
•In March, violist Paul Neubauer and his wife Kerry McDermott, a veteran member of the
New York Philharmonic, were suddenly faced with both of their grown children coming
home from The Juilliard School, violins in hand. They all watched their musical lives slip away
as the pandemic gripped the world. When they worked through their shock and confusion,
they realized they could still make music together as a family. They have arranged new
repertoire for their ensemble of three violins and viola, and found new joy in the music.
Their discussion of the events of the last five months and performances of several pieces are
moving, uplifting, and affirming. The film includes The Neubauer Family performing Godard
“Berceuse” from Jocelyn (arr. By Oliver Neubauer), Bartók Three Duets for Two Violins, S. 98,
BB 104, and Elgar –Salut d’Amour (arr. By Clara Neubauer).
