Is this a new or existing event/program in Vail? New 2. Please provide a detailed description of the event/program and its activities. As part of our Speaker Series, we would like to bring in nationally renowned author and comedic speaker and suicide prevention expert Frank King. King, a former writer for the Tonight Show, combines humor and his own lived-experience with the topic of suicide and mental health issues. The heart of his message is to offer hope and to teach others how to save a life. He connects with audience members by letting them know they are not alone and sharing stories from his personal lifelong struggle with chronic suicide ideation and depression. He has five Ted Talks and has co-written four books- Guts, Grit and The Grind - A Mental Mechanics Manual. Frank's goal is to help men, but also help women learn how they can help the men in their lives. SpeakUp ReachOut proposes a signature speaking evening event with Frank King as the keynote. Because his speaker fee ($7500) allows us to utilize him for the entire day, we would also plan a morning and mid-day event(s) for additional groups. 3. If we have leftover food, we will donate to our Food Bank (if they will accept), or drop off to Red Sandstone Elementary for their teacher staff to enjoy. SpeakUp ReachOut has had 1.25 employees for the past 9 years, so with our new expansion to 4 full time staff, sustainability is an area we are willing to learn and implement. We look forward to learning more from you as you are leaders in this area! EVENT/PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS 1. Number of participants (athletes, artists, exhibitors, etc.) anticipated 2 2. Number of volunteers needed 10 3. Number of event/program staff 4 4. Estimate of total number of spectators/attendees anticipated -150 SCORECARD CRITERIA QUESTIONS 1. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event support the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council? Our mission is to prevent suicide in Eagle County through training, awareness and HOPE! As part of our brand identity, we are gatekeepers for mental health education in our community. We offer all trainings and events free of charge so there are zero barriers. We provide interpreters, translators when needed; we also offer trainings in Spanish. We have aggressive goals of training 75% of our local population in the next five years. We need EVERYONE's help in order to achieve our goals. The Town of Vail believes in a healthy community for locals. We reinforce the health of your community by providing mental health awareness and trainings. The healthier the Town of Vail population and surrounding towns are, the healthier Vail is as a whole. 2. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event or program support Vail brand identity? SpeakUp ReachOut events follow best practices in every aspect of our trainings and events. We are a leader in our field and have been named to state suicide prevent board's as a results. Vail's brand identity is to be the best, offer the best and prioritize guests and locals equally. While we don't target a tourist market, we want our locals to live the best life they can and be as mentally healthy as they can. I believe we have this in common. 3. EE - Potential: How will the event or program enhance Leadership Skills: locally, nationally and internationally? Our event offers individuals who attend the opportunity to be a part of a larger community conversation, and contribute to breaking stigmas. When people can do this, they become a trusted adult within their circles. We need more trusted adults and people watching out for each other in our community. Men in particular do not always "speak up and reach out." We hope that this event will provide the confidence for men to prioritize their mental health and for the women who attend, for them to pay closer attention to men's mental health as well. 4. EE - Potential: What opportunities does the event or program have to foster a health and wellness reputation for Vail? Men's Mental Health is a topic that is often ignored. This will be an eye-opening event for an unspoken issue our community experiences. This problem affects many different groups: first responders, hospitality industry, construction companies, ski instructors, patrollers, lift ops, bartenders and waitressses. All of these people work in Vail. If they choose to come to our event, we will be fostering a paradigm shift and altering of social norms: it's OK to not be OK, and more importantly, it's OK to talk about it!!! 5. EE - Potential: How will the event or program provide opportunities for intellectual dialogues and problem solving SpeakUp ReachOut will ensure there are post event opportunities for follow up. While this is a one-time event, we want to track learning and opportunities to use new skills learned during the event. SpeakUp ReachOut has a monthly Men's Group that we would market to this group to encourage men to join, participate in an on-going manner, and change their (or another's) life. We also have marketing materials for a humorous mental health program called Man Therapy. We would plan to utilize these materials for post event discussion and raising awareness opportunites. 4. EE - Potential: How will the event or program deliver an educational component? Event Objectives as outlined by Frank King, the main speaker/presenter of this proposal: -Recognize the prevalence of death by suicide and the importance of prevention practices within the workplace -Learn the epidemiology, etiology and risk factors of suicidal behavior -Discover strategies for screening, assessing, and reducing the risk of suicide -Understand special concerns, risk factors and interventions related to male hospitality, construction and resort employees -Identify self-injurious behaviors and what objects, substances, and actions are common in suicide attempts -Highlight the management and treatment modalities for patients at risk for suicide, including best practices for connecting the patient to referral -Gain the knowledge and skills to conduct suicide Postvention -Comprehend the relationship between workplace stress and suicide and learn valuable techniques to stress-less at work 5. EE - Event Timing: How is it the right event or program at the right time? We are choosing "off season" spring, 2021, with the hope that Donovan Pavilion is more available. We also feel like post ski- season, and spring transition to summer, is a known mood trigger for people. The timing of our event is intentional in that hopefully people will have slowed down a little and have extra time in their lives to attend. The topic of Men's Mental Health is always the "right time" to discuss because men do not typically discuss this concern. According to the data from Eagle County, males are more likely to die by suicide than females, we want to start talking about this and making people aware it's OK to discuss Men's Mental Health. 6. EE - Demographic Fit: How will your event/program attract target markets of both visitors and community members? While this is primarily an event for locals, tourists are welcome to attend. We will place a registration priority on locals as our goals are tied to educating our Eagle County full-time population. 7. EE - Community Enrichment: What is the lasting community involvement opportunity and/or lasting community benefit of the event or program? Our intention will be to break stigmas within men's mental health and open conversations about this topic - conversations that barely exist today. This is often a taboo topic and we want to change that. We aim to have this conversation be as easy to have as it is to discuss physical health. Mental health is invisible; we want to make it visible and comfortable. We want people to know it's ok to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. 8. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program deliver fresh content and enhanced experiences? This could be an annual event with different speakers - all focused on Men's Mental Health. The following year could potentially be more of workshop with role playing and more interaction. 9. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program achieve recognition and drive participation? We will evaluate the event with an anonymous survey; in this way, we will be able to collect testimonials and use those in future marketing efforts. We plan to collaborate with local businesses and organizations to encourage buying a table, tickets for the event. 10. EE - Marketing Strength: What is the marketing reach for the event or program? (Reach refers to the total number of different people or households exposed, at least once, to a medium during a given period.) Our marketing efforts will include traditional media outlets including print, radio and social, e-newsletters. We are also happy to partner with Vail businesses that cater to locals to enhance our marketing. We also utilize video via StoryVine and the speaker has offered to provide us with content for pre-marketing purposes. We will target adult males, with females as a secondary market. 11. EE - Marketing Strength: How will the event or program leverage media and attract donor and sponsorship support? We anticipate targeting hotels and construction companies for sponsorship opportunities to cover our food and advertising. We will offer a tiered sponsorship package that is attractive to all size businesses. This issue touches everyone, so we will cast a broad net in our sponsorship outreach. 12. EE - Producer Qualifications: Explain the event or program producer’s quality, knowledge and resources to sustain and grow the event. Our staff is very experienced in planning and executing events. Our training and events coordinator most recently was working for a presidential candidate organizing national campaign events. Our director of programs and events has been organizing speaker education events for the past six years. We are confident we have the skills to pull this off. EVENT ECONOMIC IMPACT 1. Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - Estimate number of room nights for your event or program. 1 2. Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - Estimate increased spending generated by your event or program. $1 Example: Increased spend by attendees in restaurants, shops, lodging or activities. 3. Potential benefits to the Town of Vail - What estimated return on investment (ROI) in dollars should the Town of Vail expect? $25,000 ROI in this case refers to for each dollar the event/program is funded, how many dollars will be received by the Town of Vail from event impact.) Example: Estimated ROI - Formula: # of attendees x total average spending = $ (2000 attendees) x ($240 daily spend ) = $480,000 4. Explanation of how you will direct prospective attendees to book lodging within the Town of Vail and a description of how you will track the number of lodging nights generated. REMINDER: Per the CSE funding agreement, the event producer is REQUIRED to direct attendees to book in Town of Vail hotels and lodges. The ROI will be seen in a healthier work force and healthier local population. This event has the potential to save lives. This is hard to quantify, but we do know that deaths by suicide cost employers. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, the average cost of one suicide across our nation was $1,329,553 - this includes loss of income for families, medical costs for families and individuals, and lost productivity for employers . More than 97 percent of this cost was due to lost productivity. The remaining 3 percent were costs associated to medical treatment. The total cost of national suicides and suicide attempts was $93.5 billion. Every $1 spent on psychotherapeutic interventions and interventions that strengthened linkages among different care providers saved $2.50 in the cost of suicides. SpeakUp ReachOut Community Walk and Memorial Butterfly Launch Remember, Reflect and Revitalize HOPE! September 12, 2020 Fact Sheet SpeakUp ReachOut Mission: To prevent suicide in Eagle County by providing training, awareness and HOPE. 100% of money raised will stay local to fund programs such as:  ASIST Training: ASIST is a two-day workshop designed for members of all care- giving groups. The emphasis is on teaching suicide first-aid to help a person at risk stay safe and seek further help as needed.  QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer): QPR is an emergency mental health intervention that teaches lay and professional gatekeepers to recognize and respond positively to suicide warning signs and behaviors.  SOS: SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention program is an award-winning, nationally recognized program designed for middle and high school-age students. The program teaches students how to identify the symptoms of depression and suicidality in themselves or their friends, and encourages help-seeking through the use of the ACT® technique (Acknowledge, Care, Tell).  Loss Assistance Care Packages: When a family loses a loved one to suicide, they often feel alone in their grief as they try to make sense out of the unimaginable. The purpose of the Loss Assistance Care Package is to give loved ones the resources they need as they grieve and to let families and friends know there is a community who supports them.  Youth Mental Health First Aid: designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.  International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day: Join a community of suicide loss survivors to find comfort and gain understanding as we share stories of healing and hope. ISOSLD is the one day a year when people who are affected by suicide loss gather in their local communities for support, information, and empowerment. This past April, Erin Ivie transitioned from part-time to full-time Executive Director; Carol Johnson joined Ivie in late spring as the Director of Programs and Events. The team continued to sprout in mid-summer with the addition of Emily Boyd and Donyelle Dewey as the Training and Events Coordinator and Training and Awareness Specialist, respectively. Home-grown and long-time local career and life experience positions the new SURO team to hit the ground running and greatly improve suicide prevention impact and outcomes for our community. “I have dreamed of the day that we would be able to accomplish all the things our board has wanted us to do over the years,” said Ivie. “It’s one thing to expand our impact and outreach, but it’s another thing to improve outcomes. That is the ultimate goal. We want to bring awareness to and train as many locals as possible about the importance of suicide prevention and loss support. We are in the business of saving lives and everyone can help. This gives me hope because lives can be saved,” continued Ivie. Meet the Team: Ivie, who was born and raised in Eagle County, first joined SURO in 2012 as a board member and switched to employee status working five-hours a week, in her spare time. Prior to becoming full-time at SURO, Ivie was the Assistant to the Town of Eagle’s Chief of Police, where she thrived in a role that saw her wear many hats and serve many different community functions all related to safety and community impact. Ivie’s passion for suicide prevention is contagious and makes her poised to be the intrepid leader for the newly assembled SURO team. Johnson, who moved to Eagle County in 1989, has held a variety of marketing and public relations positions over the years, while most recently serving as Mountain Youth’s Community Education Manager and facilitator of Eat Chat Parent. As SURO’s new Director of Programs and Events, Johnson’s approach to prevention work includes an equity and cultural relevancy lens as well as a youth, family and multi-generation approach. Boyd, born and raised in Eagle County, was recently traveling the country coordinating large-scale campaign events for a high-profile presidential candidate’s bid. As SURO’s new Training and Event Coordinator, Boyd is well positioned to travel from one end of our valley, to the other, creating and organizing bicultural and bilingual training and educational opportunities for locals to learn more about suicide prevention. Details are her specialty. Prior to joining the SURO team, Donyelle Dewey was most recently a marketing coordinator for Boone’s Wine and Spirits and before that served Eagle County Sheriff’s Office as a Law Enforcement Officer where she focused much of her training on mental health and crisis intervention. Dewey’s unique combination of public safety leadership with savvy marketing skills places her at the helm of increasing SURO’s awareness. Dewey is a Colorado native and moved to Eagle County right after graduating college. The SURO Board of Directors, led by Town of Avon’s Chief Greg Daly as President, and Sotheby’s Real Estate Agent Corey Lamothe as SURO’s Vice President, announced lofty goals this past winter, pre-COVID19: the newly formed staff is to provide suicide prevention trainings to 75% of our community over the next five years. While Ivie, Johnson, Boyd and Dewey have their work cut out for them, they are more than ready to get started. “On behalf of the board, we are extremely excited to welcome Carol, Emily and Donyelle to the SpeakUp ReachOut family,” said Chief Greg Daly. “I know that this dynamic team under the continued leadership of our amazing executive director, Erin, will expand on the many suicide prevention, awareness and loss support programs that are currently being offered. As an organization, we are continually thinking outside of the box to make the most significant positive impact especially in this current challenging COVID environment. This new chapter in the evolution of the SpeakUp ReachOut organization is very exciting. It has taken ten years to get to this pivotal point. This could not happen without the amazing collaboration of our partners, in particular Eagle Valley Behavioral Health and Vail Health.” continued Daly SpeakUp ReachOut, founded in 2009, exists to prevent suicide prevention in the Eagle River Valley through training, awareness and hope. They are community members we have lost to suicide and they were remembered during a special National Suicide Prevention Month event hosted by SpeakUp ReachOut on Saturday at Freedom Park in Edwards. PAM BOYD | PBOYD@VAILDAILY.COM Suicide prevention group keeps conversation going Editor’s note: If you or anyone close to you is struggling with depression or thoughts of suicide, help is available at 1 (844) 493- 8255. Help is also available locally through the Hope Center of the Eagle River Valley at 970-306-4673. The names on the paper butterflies were familiar — Nate, Taylor, Luke, David, Todd, Olivia — members of the local community who died by suicide. On Saturday, family members and friends remembered those losses and gathered in a spirit of community. They also dedicated themselves to the work that will prevent new names from be- coming part of the paper butterfly display next year. Saturday marked the eighth time Speak- Up ReachOut — the local suicide preven- tion group — has gathered the community for a commemorative event held during National Suicide Prevention Month. But as guest speaker Anne Moss Rogers told the assembled crowd, the conversation about suicide can’t be restricted to a single event or a particular month. “We have to speak up and reach out every day of the year,” she noted. “There is no right time. It can happen at any time. We need to talk about it all the time.” Making sure those conversations happen has become Rogers’ mission. That mission is the result of her son’s death by suicide five years ago. FUNNIEST, MOST POPULAR Charles Rogers was 20 years old when he took his own life on June 2, 2015. He had struggled with depression and ad- diction prior to his death by suicide, but as his mother shared, Charles’ life was much fuller than the issues that resulted in his death. “My son was the funniest, most popu- lar kid in school,” she recalled. “He was the type of person that if he walked into the room, all heads turned toward him.” As an elementary student, Charles begged his parents to buy a white tuxe- do so he could wear it to his fifth-grade graduation. The $25 that the tuxedo cost turned out to be money well spent. Charles proudly wore it to cotillion classes and as a Halloween costume. “No one embraced different like Charles,” said Rogers. Beyond his goofy exuberance, he also had a caring soul. “He connected in a way that was deep and people knew he was listening to them when they spoke with him,” said Rogers. Through illustration, she shared a sto- ry from one of his friends, a young girl named Lauren. Lauren was fighting her own demons during her high school years and one day she was searingly depressed when she headed to classes. Something in her countenance that day drew Charles’ attention. He sought her out — a girl he didn’t even really know — to compose and perform an on-site rap. “When he finished, he told her that pretty girls shouldn’t look so sad,” Rog- ers said. “That’s what I miss most about my son. In a world where we don’t have time to listen to others, he had time.” NOT ON THE RADAR Charles was often a sunshine-in-your- pocket presence. But the darkness was there, too. From the time he was 14 years old, the Rogers family recognized that aspect of his character and when he was 17 years old, he was diagnosed with depression. Mental health professionals told his parents he was “high risk.” “They never said the words that he was a suicide risk, but that’s what he was,” Rogers said.
