SCORECARD CRITERIA QUESTIONS
1. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event support the mission and vision of the Vail Town Council?
Our focus on Rural Strategic Development ensures a strong economy to support our people and their businesses through all
phases of growth. Since our inception, we have seen thousands of entrepreneurs launch successful startups, expand existing
businesses or return to profitability.
2. EE - Brand Fit: How will your event or program support Vail brand identity?
Potential to build the Vail Brand as an educational destination. Our goal is for attendees to develop businesses within our local
economy that contributes to the overall growth and success of Vail.
3. EE - Potential: How will the event or program enhance Leadership Skills: locally, nationally and internationally?
This program is designed to foster the entrepreneurial spirit of aspiring (and existing) small business owners in the Vail Valley.
Attendees are immersed in workshops where they learn how to own and lead their own companies. Each attendee also receives a
University of Colorado Leeds School of Business Certificate of Completion.
Overarching program goals:
- Diversify our local economies with new businesses
- Grow and retain professional career opportunities
4. EE - Potential: What opportunities does the event or program have to foster a health and wellness reputation for
Vail?
None
5. EE - Potential: How will the event or program provide opportunities for intellectual dialogues and problem
solving
This workshop is designed to inspire and promote intellectual dialogue between aspiring entrepreneurs, existing small business
owners and professors from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder.
4. EE - Potential: How will the event or program deliver an educational component?
We host (2) experienced professors from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder to teach this
workshop. The professors are also experienced entrepreneurs and successful business owners. We will also curate a panel
discussion with (3) local entrepreneurs to impart their knowledge and experience.
5. EE - Event Timing: How is it the right event or program at the right time?
October is the perfect time for people to take the time to immerse themselves in self-growth and educational opportunities.
October is also typically a slower month for Vail and this would help generate room nights and provide local business with
additional revenue in an off-peak period.
6. EE - Demographic Fit: How will your event/program attract target markets of both visitors and community
members?
Our event is focused on bringing aspiring entrepreneurs, existing small business owners and community members that are
interested in supporting the entrepreneurial spirit within the Vail Valley.
7. EE - Community Enrichment: What is the lasting community involvement opportunity and/or lasting community
benefit of the event or program?
We are reimagining how we can best support small business owners. In the last year, the Northwest SBDC has seen more interest
in rural Colorado from entrepreneurs. That interest has only increased as a result of the pandemic. People want to move here, and
they want to start businesses here. People who are laid off or underemployed are brushing off their business plans and looking to
turn side hustles into companies. Out of recession comes opportunity. We want to make sure that there are resources available to
support rural Colorado business development so that the trend continues. We need to provide tools in Rural Colorado to help
entrepreneurs with a vision realize success.
8. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program deliver fresh content and enhanced experiences?
The content is constantly being reevaluated and adjusted to be relevant for the workshop. The learning objectives of this
workshop included:
Develop an understanding for what it takes to be an entrepreneur
Understand the process to create a value proposition
Determine ways to be different and establish a competitive advantage
How to get your first ten customers
Grasp entrepreneurial economics and fundraising
9. EE - Growth Potential: How will the event or program achieve recognition and drive participation?
We will drive participation by designing a robust integrated marketing campaign that also includes recognition from community
organizations.
10. EE - Marketing Strength: What is the marketing reach for the event or program? (Reach refers to the total
number of different people or households exposed, at least once, to a medium during a given period.)
Our newsletter and email database has over 6,000 subscribers that will see this event promoted for at least two months prior to
the start of the event. In addition, we have the support of the entire Colorado SBDC network which promotes events and
workshops at each of the (15) regional SBDC's across the state. We also have a long-standing Facebook page where our boosted
event posts typically reach 3,000 per boosted post (~average 4 days, Eagle County focused).
11. EE - Marketing Strength: How will the event or program leverage media and attract donor and sponsorship
support?
We are working closely with local media and foster those relationships to promote our workshop (print, digital, radio).
12. EE - Producer Qualifications: Explain the event or program producer’s quality, knowledge and resources to
sustain and grow the event.
We have been producing and executing this event twice a year (spring program is done in another NW Colorado region) for the
past (4) years.
Erin McCuskey, NW Colorado SBDC Regional Director, joined the Northwest SBDC in July of 2019, at the time when Eagle County
became the new host for the program. She is a 14-year resident of Eagle County, and has worked throughout the Northwest
Colorado region in previous roles. Her background in organizational development, human resources, recruitment and training was
the right fit to develop a new structure and to scale the Northwest SBDC program.
The director serves as the primary consultant for the SBDC, in regular communication with federal, state, and local partners to
identify small business opportunities for the region. The SBDC director serves as the regional eyes and ears for emerging small
business initiatives in the region, promoting these local efforts and success stories to grant funders and industry experts who can
spotlight the work of the region on a larger scale. While there are tools and best practices to pull on made available through the
national and state SBDC’s, the opportunity to build out the program to make it a service for Northwest Colorado is in the hands of
the director and local advisors. As such, the director is responsible for consultant recruitment, program development, fundraising,
and identifying and meeting the goals identified by federal, state, and local partners.
Erin has a genuine interest in understanding what makes each community of Northwest Colorado unique and understanding the
challenges small businesses face in the region. She has invested time into a plan to promote a successful regional SBDC for long
term sustainability. The Northwest SBDC rose to the occasion to provide pandemic support with exceptionally limited resources,
our services are proven, and we are now poised to grow.

Demystifying Entrepreneurship Returns to the Vail Valley Oct. 9 & 10, 2020
This year’s workshop will be hosted virtually, including small group breakout sessions and practical
exercises to put business ideas into action and find success at entrepreneurship
EAGLE COUNTY, Colo., Sept. 24, 2020 - Demystifying Entrepreneurship returns this October 9 & 10 in
a new virtual format to allow people to tap into the possibility of doing business in the Vail Valley from
wherever they currently sit. As in years past, The Northwest Colorado Small Business Development
Center (SBDC) and The University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business Deming Center for
Entrepreneurship (CU Boulder) are collaborating to host this program and support small business growth
and development in the Vail Valley. This CU Boulder certificate course will impart a framework to help
entrepreneurs develop sought-after products and services, avoid pitfalls and succeed at
entrepreneurship.
This year’s workshop will be taught by Erick Mueller and Cynthia Banks, entrepreneurs and
award-winning professors at the Leeds School of Business. This valuable program is designed for
aspiring entrepreneurs as well as current small business owners. This course provides existing
businesses with a fresh perspective to explore new growth opportunities while providing the perfect
primer for entrepreneurs navigating their way through the business start up process. Event participants
can also expect resiliency and innovation as a theme discussed throughout the program.
The two-day virtual workshop kicks off on Friday, October 9 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and regroups on
Saturday, October 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The dynamic content includes small group breakout
sessions, practical exercises to test and improve the viability of a business model and opportunities
throughout the year for continued engagement and mentorship. Cost for the workshop and ongoing
cohort support is only $50, with scholarships available.
This is the fourth installment of the workshop in the Vail Valley, which has hosted some now well-known
entrepreneurs.
“It’s amazing to reflect on the businesses that have launched out of this series; brand names that we now
recognize in the valley that continue to grow,” said Erin McCuskey, Northwest SBDC Regional Director.
“The entrepreneurs have the concepts and the work ethic, but this class can be a source of inspiration to
jump in and to keep going.”
McCuskey also commented that the SBDC has seen an uptick in inquiries about startups come out of this
pandemic, which she said isn’t surprising because new business is often born out of recession.
“This is a great time to test ideas and to see if there is an opportunity to put them into action.”
This virtual workshop was also hosted for a local cohort in August, and wrapped up with exceptional
feedback. Participants created personal connections after a Friday evening and Saturday morning on
Zoom.
“I would highly recommend this class to others, I really enjoyed the group format and the overlap of the
diverse backgrounds and experience levels,” said Matt Hayden, owner of Elevated Colorado Management
Services in Eagle and recent graduate of the Demystifying Entrepreneurship workshop. “Meeting on
Zoom made it easier to connect. I actually look forward to continuing to meet virtually."
