CRC - Brand Fit: How will your event or program support the Vail brand identity? Vail...Like Nothing on Earth! Shipstad Entertainment and the Vail Skating Festival's Ice Spectacular and outdoor shows offer a live experience of close-up skating (on-ice seating) that most people never get to experience. The Vail Daily's review of our shows state that most spectators never get that close of an opportunity to witness Olympic and World caliber skating athletes! Other Vail Daily articles have had us the #1 thing to do in Vail. 7. CRC - Event Timing: How is it the right event/program at the right time? Start of the busiest time of the Town of Vail's season. It's great to offer the guests and residents of Vail top entertainment during the Town's busy season. 8. I believe we will continue retention with the residents of Vail as well as offering amazing entertainment to the guests of Vail. It is much easier for us to advertise our events now because people know the level of product that we are bringing to the Vail Valley. 9. Also, the flow of the show is high energy with fantastic musical choices. Reviews on our past Vail events have mentioned that our musical choices are wonderful. One of our goals is to draw in spectators that have never seen live skating before and become skating fans! 10. CRC - Growth Potential: How will the event/program promote an atmosphere of vitality, fun and celebration? With the level of athletes and the high energy music and themes, we promote a ton of fun for everyone involved. We also distribute 300 large posters to businesses, hotels, and resorts around the Vail Valley area and surrounding cities. 12. With this being our 4th year of the Vail Skating Festival, we have made great relationships with people around the Town of Vail. Guests and residents are now looking for our event to come back. We have a great relationship with the Vail Daily. I truly miss TV8. One of our company's highlights was performing at the Super Bowl Pre-Game VIP Kickoff Party in Indianapolis. 13. CRC - Producer Qualifications: Explain the adaptability of the event and the event producer to adjust to changing public health orders. Objectives: What are you trying to accomplish through your marketing efforts? The three-day festival included free outdoor shows as well as the ticketed Ice Spectacular at Dobson Ice Arena. There were also seminars. Chris Dillmann | cdillmann@vaildaily.com Whether you’re a local or visitor, you’ve probably noticed that the Vail Valley offers a unique variety of entertainment, from free shows at Vail Snow Days, like Modest Mouse, to moderately priced Vilar Performing Arts Center performances and summer dance and orchestral music festivals. But Saturday’s second annual Vail Skating Festival Ice Spectacular, featuring Olympic bronze medalists Mirai Nagasu and Chris and Alexa Knierim, was truly unique; intimate, high- level shows like this just don’t happen anywhere — not even in the largest of cities. Thanks to The Steadman Clinic and its partners, audiences not only received up -close and personal seats to some of the hottest competit ive skaters in the nation, but also paid an incredibly small price: $20 for bleacher seats and $40 for on-ice seats. Dobson Ice Arena’s small bleacher section provides excellent sightlines, and the on-ice vantage points give audiences a visceral feel for how fast these skaters move as they carve past, preparing for jumps and spins. This year’s 90-minute show was just as exciting as last year’s (which featured Olympic gold and silver medalist Patrick Chan), with a rapid-fire burst of over 25 high-energy routines. Nagasu, the first female American skater to successful land the most challenging triple jump — a triple axel — at the Olympics, effortlessly pulled off double axels at the show. Nagasu’s performances to telling songs like “The Show Must Go On” and Qu een’s “Under Pressure” showed how strong she has returned since last year’s surgery by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, due to a torn labrum and fractured portion of her hip socket. The Knierims, a married pairs couple, let their love shine with a moving routin e to “At Last,” followed by Queen’s “Hammer to Fail” during the second half. And, if audiences didn’t know who current competitors like Livvy Shilling, Alex Johnson, Paige Rydberg, Tarah Kayne and Danny O’Shea and Andrew Torgashev were, they do now: Each skated memorable routines, from Johnson’s strong and sexy opening act, which got the crowd going with horizontal ice slides and triple jumps, to Shilling’s theatrical facial expressions to Kayne and O’Shea’s smooth choreography to Heart’s “These Dreams” and Torgashev’s graceful routine, followed by his powerful moves to “Another One Bites the Dust.” In fact, the second half played out like a fireworks display of stunning costumes and skaters, as every competitor performed in a rousing Queen medley, with Sonja Hilmer showcasing her talent in a dramatic routine to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The crew ushered in a bit of humor and circus spectacle as Torgashev and Cordero Zuckerman (another stand-out skater) raced their lit up trikes on ice and Tyler Shipstad jumped over a long string of barrels. Four hometown girls from the Skating Club of Vail garnered warm applause for their flapper - esq and Chorus Line routines, and the Denver Synchronicity club delivered a precise and flowing group number. A few skaters did suffer from the extreme shortening of the ice rink on both ends; some fell, one singled her jump and others couldn’t fully extend their landings, due to on -ice seating and a bar, but that just served to show how difficult this sport really is. After the grand finale, all of the competitors chatted with audience members who purchased on-ice tickets — again, something that just doesn’t happen without paying big bucks for special meet-and-greets. The Olympians and other performers were happy to sign autographs and pose with every audience member who asked, making the show not only exciting, but also an intimate and unforgettable experience. 2020 Vail Skating Festival Recap: Four weeks of shows on the weekend through the month of December. The shows were free to the guests and residents of Vail with two shows every Saturday night at 5:00pm and 6:00pm at the Solaris Ice Rink. Shows were monitored with guests staying socially distanced with multiple vantage points. The shows were 15-17 minutes long and featured an Olympian, World competitors, US National Champions, and seasoned Professionals. The shows were a huge success and many of the guests would come up to me to tell me thank you for having live entertainment and to thank the Town of Vail for providing that for them. The shows were slightly different from week to week which gave a reason for spectators to come back for more. 2021 Vail Skating Festival improvements: Additional spotlights (Dobson Arena’s spotlights do not have the proper output that is needed for our event). One more week of daily ads in the Vail Daily. The Solaris is a perfect location to social distance (people respected each other’s space before, during, and after the shows) •Event layout (stanchions and spacing for 75 spectators inside the ropes, two security guards, ushers to assist people with seating, announcements every 5-minutes of our sponsors and viewing instructions with social distancing, additional sound brought in the last two weeks, all contributed to an amazing experience for guests and residents) •Ads in the Vail Daily looked amazing. We went from ¼ page ads to ½ page vertical ads and it looked great! •The number of spectators that came up to us after the show to say thank you was very rewarding. People LOVED seeing live entertainment. •Events like this show why Vail is a premier destination. People were blown away with this level of free entertainment. Estimated Attendance Results 5 •Each week the shows increased in spectators ranging from 150 -350 •5:00pm shows always had more spectators than the 6:00pm show •The street level on the south side and the balcony were great vantage points for spectators •I used video and photos to get numbers of attendance Estimated Attendee Profile Results 6 •Attendees came from (local, regional, out of state, international): •We had many spectators with foreign accents. Japanese skating fans immediately wanted to talk to Tomoki Hiwatashi at the end of the show on December 26th. •We had some skating fans from the front range attend the event only for the event. •Majority of the event was from guests of Vail walking by and seeing the skaters practice and then stay for the show. •Many spectators came from seeing the ad in the Vail Daily. •On December 26th, I believe most of the audience was from people walking by and staying as well as the Vail Daily’s #1 event to see over the weekend. Event Strengths & Weaknesses 7 •How did the event exceed expectations? •People respecting the social distancing guild lines •Excellent attendance (especially Dec 19 and 26) •World class elite skating matches the World level destination of Vail •What are areas for event improvement? •Sound was much better the last two weeks (hired sound engineer and did not use BOL’s system.) •How did this year’s event compare to last year? •The outdoor show aspect was so much better with the flow of the show, theatrical lighting, and new sound system. Vail Brand Compatibility The Premier International Mountain Resort Community 8 •How did the event /program support the Vail Brand? •WORLD CLASS SKATING MATCHES PREMIER INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN RESORT!!! •No other resort in the world offers free live entertainment like Vail. I believe it blows people away to see the level of outdoor production and entertainment. •My family skied 5-weeks in a row during our stay in Vail (3 days at Vail, 1 day at Beaver Creek, and 1 day at Keystone). The Town’s communication with guests about masks, social distancing, pass scanners, and the ski concierge in all lift lines was completely different in Vail than the other areas. Brand Positioning: •Town of Vail: The Premier International Mountain Resort Community •Vail Mountain: Like nothing on earth Community Contribution 9 •How did the event impact Vail’s sense of community? •The guests and residents of Vail were thrilled with the event! I heard many great comments from both groups. •Vail is a leader in giving their guests the ultimate experience. Events like ours demonstrate that The Town of Vail is second to none at creating memories that will last a lifetime. An amazing time on the mountain, world-class free entertainment before dinner, and at one of the most beautiful locations on earth! Topline Marketing Efforts 10 •What are the top 5 successful marketing tactics, executions or results from your event/program? •1) Vail Daily ½ Page Ad and 50,000 views on the website •2) Word of mouth by visiting the hotels, resorts, and businesses around Town (having flyers, business cards, and posters to leave out or give to their guests). •3) Making #1 on the top things to do in Vail the last week was fantastic. We made #3 the week before as well. •4) Facebook advertising and posts 4 days a week helped the Front Range Community know about the event and be able to come up and make a day or evening of it. •Karen Chen posted a video of herself skating at the Solaris and US Figure Skating’s social media reps picked up on it. It had 8K views in a few hours. •Please attach complete marketing plan to end of presentation. Potential for Growth & Sponsorships/Media Exposure 11 •I would love to see the FREE events continue. I believe it is an event that separates the Town of Vail from other resorts around the world. •Bring back the Ice Spectacular show at Dobson Arena. •Bring back the Clinic/Seminar twice a year (summer and the week of the Ice Spectacular). •What sponsors do you plan to target next year? •I still believe that a real estate company would be ideal for our target audience as well as getting back our figure skating sponsors as well. •How will you leverage media exposure and extend the marketing reach next year? •Half page ads, more visits to the concierges on a weekly basis, gain back the front range and nation-wide participants for the entire event, more accessibility to the Vail Daily for in-person interviews with our athletes. Sustainability Efforts 12 •What measures were taken at your event/program to support the environmentally-friendly goals of the Town of Vail? •LED Lighting •Location that already has excellent trash and recycling bins for guests visiting the area. The Town of Vail is committed to the stewardship and protection of our unique mountain environment. In consideration of both our local and global impacts and opportunities, our environmental vision is to demonstrate and promote: renewable energy, resource efficiency, ecosystem protection, and community awareness and education.
