1.0 MSE Woll Materials
1.1 Backf�ll soils
1.1.1 Reinforced zone backfill shall meet CDOT Closs 1 Structurol Backfill.
7.1.2 The port of the bockfill soil possing the No. 200 sieve sholl hove o liquid limit less thon 35 ond
a plost�c�ty �ndex ess than 6 when tested �n occordonce w�th AASHTO 789 ond T90, respect�vely.
1.1.3 Retoined zone backfill sholl be gronulor moteriol consisting of ot leost 509; sond or grovel with o
moximum porticle s�ze of 4" ond the fines content hoving a plost�city index of no more thon 10.
2.0 MSE Wall Construction Sequence
2.1 The MSE wolls sholl be founded ent�rely on competent moteriol. The foundot�on sholl be
over-excavoted so that ot least 8�� of the focinq rock or rock is buried below finol grode.
2.2 Install the droin p�pes os shown on the drowinys.
2.3 Re�nforced zone ond retoined zone bockfill sholl be ploced in lifts no thicker thon 8". Backfill shall
be ploced in horizontol loyers ond compocted aqainst horizontol surfoces. Only hand-operoted
compoction equipment sholl be used within 3' of the back of the focing of woll. Bockfiil should be
ploced ond compocted sequentiolly from the foce oF woll to the bock of the geogrid
reinforcements to aid in geogrid tension�ng.
2.4 Re�nforced zone and retoined zone bockfill sholl be compocted to ot least 95% of maximum dry
density os determ�ned by the stondord Proctor (AA$HTO T-99) ot opt�mum mo�sture content t2�.
2.5 Place geogrid reinforcements os shown on the drpwings.
2.6 Geogrid re�nforcement length os shown on the drowings is meosured from the face of woll to the back of the
geogrid.
2.7 Trock veh�cles sholl not be operoted d�rectly on the geogr�ds. A m�n�mum of 6" of backf�ll �s
requ�red to operote trock veh�chles over geogr�ds and turn�ng shoil be m�n�mized to ovoid displocing
the geogr�ds.
2.8 Rubber-tired vehicles moy drive slowly directly on the geogrids if necessory.
2.9 Geogrid reinforcements shall be placed with the machine d�rect�on perpendiculor to the woll foce.
2.10 In convex woll curves, overloppinq geoqrids may be placed if ot least 2�� of bockfill is ploced
between overlopping geogrids.
2.11 Permanent surfoce ond irr�gation woter diversion �s the respons�bility of the owner. The bockfill
so�is should not be ollowed to soturote.
3.0 MSE Woll Design Porameters
3.1 The MSE woll has been designed in generol accordance with procedures contained in the NCMA
��Des�gn Monual for Segmental Retoining Wolls".
3.2 The followinq volues hove been ossumed for soil�rock design parameters:
