EAGLE BAHN GONDOLA FIRE ALARM SUBMITTAL REVIEW
Dear Tim:
This letter is in review of the fire alarm shop submittal received April 12, 2005, for the
Eagle Bahn Gondo►a in Vail, Colorado.
The fire alarm submittal for this project was reviewed in accordance with specifications
(16721) and engineering drawings provided for the project. This submittal is being
considered acceptable; however, the items commented on below should be addressed.
1. The magnetically held doors in the lower level of the gondola (between the
gondola and tunnel) should de-energize not only upon smoke detection but also
upon activation of a manual pull station or waterflow switch.
2. Activation of the silence features at the FACP should not only silence audibles,
but should also activate the visual trouble indicator at the FACP.
3. Please be sure to coordinate with the "others" (contractor) responsible for
waterflow switch and valve tamper switch installation.
4. Please be sure to follow specification requirements for false alarms. The
Acclimate Plus detector near the emergency generator could be the culprit for
false alarms when the generator is running. However, after further review, the
detector is a combination photoelectric and thermal detector that should help
minimize or eliminate any false alarms resulting from the generator running. In
addition, there is an exhaust vent with louvers on the wall behind the generator
that automatically activates upon gen�rator start. If false alarms do occur as
indicated in the specification, this device may need changed to a heat detector
only.
5. As was discussed with Mike McGee, Fire Marshal, there is not a need for remote
annunciation in the lower level of the gondola, even though automatic sprinkler
control valves are located there.

Calling me will not solve the problem.
We need a plan that shows the elements needed for proper review.
A special inspector will certainly help. The special inspector from SGM and I
should probably
touch base so we can confirm expectations. A significant element of this line is
regulated by
State statutes as well as ERWS standards. and must comply with NFPA. Part of it
depends on
the quality of the plan. I will very likely show up for a "spot check" because I
am expected
to sign off on the final product.
This is a fire protection line - plain and simple. It supplies protection for a
gondola that
can fail in less than 7 minutes under fire conditions.
It must be done correctly.
The contractor cannot build off the plans submitted for the permit. There is
insufficent data
to even start.

make their design consultants do their job properly and submit proper

It appears the permit BOS-0039 has been issued but the Fire Department has not
signed off on
it.
IFC and NFPA standards apply but are not adequately addressed. State of Colorado
Division of
Fire Safety requires compliance with NFPA standards as well.
The applicant should re-submit plans showing details required under NFPA 24,
Chapter 10,
Underground, 2002 edition. The plans should bear a stamp by a Colorado Registered
Professional Engineer.
No statement of limitations is present.
Data submitted does not reflect scope indicated on plans.
Specifications submitted reflect options. Selection of materials should be
reflected on the
plans.
Specified design pressures are not shown. The design should anticipate pressures up
to 250 PSI.
Details for ground cover show depth "varies" .
Specifications require compliance with plans but much of the required data is not
shown on
