As you know the site is extremely਍ഀ steep and it was absolutely necessary from a construction standpoint to optimize the "benching" of਍ഀ the excavations to provide a constructable foundation with functional lower levels. By benching in਍ഀ the vertical increments as we did we were able to retain the soil behind the house. These benches also਍ഀ provided safe site excavation cuts that could be temporarily managed until the concrete foundation਍ഀ walls were completed without large lay-backs that would have effected the uphill slope. These਍ഀ benches and the required stair stepping distance between walls gave us the void spaces. Filling these਍ഀ void spaces back in with soil would have defeated the purpose of the benching by adding back larger਍ഀ amounts and depths of soil to be retained.਍ഀ As you and I have discussed, the void spaces were entirely structural requirements which were਍ഀ absolutely necessary to make it possible to design and construct the foundation.਍ഀ Please let me know if you have any questions or if I may be of further assistance.਍ഀ Sincerely:਍ഀ NEWKIRK ENGIN਍ഀ Paul H.
