General Information:
All projects requiring design review must receive approval prior to submitting a building permit application. Please
refer to the submittal requirements for the particular approval that is requested. An application for Design Review
cannot be accepted until all required information is received by the Community Development Department. The
project may also need to be reviewed by the Town Council and/or the Planning and Environmental Commission.
Design review approval lapses unless a building permit is issued and construction commences within
one year of the approval.

The following are the requirements found in Title 14 which allow the
DRB to review an application to put brown asphalt shingles on half a
duplex when the other half is not proposing to re-roof from wood
shake shingles at this time. The owners of the half not re-roofing at
this time have stated in writing that they are in favor of the proposed
asphalt shingle and will utilize it when they are ready to re-roof.
14-10-5F, Building Materials and Design, Vail Town Code
"Two-family and multi-family dwellings shall be required to have
uniform roof covering materials, except when the Design
Review Board determines that the materials are compatible, are
integral to the architectural style of the structure and different
materials do not share any ridges or planes, but may share a
valley. "
Should the DRB choose to approve the re-roof of half a duplex staff
requests that the following finding be made as a part of the motion.
"The Design Review Board finds that the proposed asphalt
shingle is compatible with the remaining wood shake shingle, in
keeping with the architectural style of the structure, and does
not share any ridges or planes with the roof forms of the other
half of the duplex."
