Box 176 - ~ vl Vail, CO 81658 Re: Recommendation to remove 13 spruces at 813 Potato Patch Dr. Dear Luc, On 8-14=07, I evaluated all spruces at your property for efficacy of spruce ailment treatment. This report will provide a history of the spruce ailment, treatment background, current state of health, and recommendations. History of spruce symptoms In 2004, you had me evaluate symptoms of an extremely rare ailment affecting the large spruce at the base of your driveway. The symptoms of this ailment were a significant defoliation of spruce needles and asparagus-like formations of clustered/contorted/glued new needle growth. I immediately commenced a subcontract tree spray treatment program which included insecticide and miticide. Not only did the treatment program have little impact, but the ailment spread to additional spruces the following growing season. This ailment has continued to spread unabated to new trees every year since. Currently there are 13 infected spruces. Source & treatment of ailment During the last four years I have brought the revered CSU Forest Entomologist and 2 pesticide company entomologists to your property to evaluate this ailment. I have also sent samples to venerated entomologists from across the USA. The best guess as to the cause of this ailment is a microscopic pest called eriophyid mite. As this pest cannot be seen without a microscope, and its symptoms in conifers are very rare, there has been little research performed, and definitive treatment recommendations are simply not available. In my experience, the most promising chemical treatment to date has been Forbid (ingredient Spiromesifen), although complete control has obviously not yet been experienced. Spray treatments to date have not prevented new infection and have not controlled the spread to previously unaffected spruces. Therefore, drastic measures should be considered in order to prevent further spread to all of your spruce trees. I recommend that you remove all 13 infected spruces. All 13 trees have been flagged. If you have any further questions, please give me a call. Sincerely, Mark Stelle, ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist
