PO Box 7997 Avon, CO 81620 Re: 2°d Gore Creek Meadows '08 tree inspection Dear Kent, At the request of Sherry Dorward, earlier this summer I performed a hazard tree assessment of Narrowleaf cottonwoods at Gore Creek Meadows. At your request, on July 23, 2008, I made a second visit to evaluate general tree health needs of all trees. This report will document my findings and provide additional recommendations. 70) 926-3594 Spruce hazard trees Two spruce trees, located immediately west of the pool, are exhibiting substantial trunk decay. My audio interpretation of a mallet test concludes cross sectional trunk decay in the east tree to be greater than 85%. This 75-ft (+) tall tree is located less than 30 feet from the pool edge and obviously has a significant target when it fails. As I alerted you in my July 23 phone call, this tree is an extreme hazard and should be removed immediately. I estimate the adjacent spruce, located 5 feet to the west to be greater than 60% decayed. Given its condition and the close proximity of the pool, I also recommend removing this tree. ~ ~--' Pruning The foliage of several conifers is encroaching on roads and walkways. I recommend a columnar prune on the following: 1) Spruce west of H-20 2) Spruce at F-1 3) Concolor fir at Unit G Poolside mugos need height reduction and guying to increase resistance to snowload- caused flattening. The large clump of willow and cottonwood sprouts west of pool should also be professionally pruned to shape bushes. ~. A CA - w, ~ -.. _ ~.J d c"a"".~ ~", ~~ MEAABER Mark Stclic Tree spraying I detected only a trace of needle scale and wooly aphid in some spruces. Certainly not enough to justify spraying at this time, but population levels should be monitored annually. The property contains 7 small/medium lodgepole pine that I recommend be sprayed annually for mountain pine beetle. I detected one subalpine fir at unit M-3 that I recommend spraying for spider mites. The most significant insect issue is spider mites and aphids in all aspens. I recommend these aspen trees receive and annual treatment for spider mites. Root-caused damage to pavement Throughout the complex, cottonwood roots are heaving blacktop. The size and quantity of bubbles in the pavement will continue to increase in the future. The only practical way to deal with this issue is removal of all offending cottonwood trees. Generally this translates to removing all cottonwood trees located within 50 feet of pavement. Beaver screening The chicken wire installed on many aspens is disrepair. Most screens have either fallen or are choking and stressing trunks. I recommend that new screens be installed. The most effective and economical method is to apply a large enough screen to provide a minimum of 50% material overlap. The objective is for the HOA not to be forced to pay for all new material in two years when the screens will need to be enlarged to accommodate increase trunk diameter. Ex: A 10" diameter trunk (at root collar) would require 3' X 31.4" of material plus an extra 15.7" of overlap. The net screen size fora 10" diameter tree would be approximately 3' X 47" of material. Aspens, basal bark damage Most aspens located within turf on this property are the recipient of irreparable mechanical damage to the base of trunks. This trunk damage is the cumulative result of many years of careless lawn mower and string trimmer use. The problem is that grass has been allowed to grow against the trunks of most aspens. All trees are susceptible to damage by lawn cutting equipment, but aspens are particularly vulnerable due to the soft live outer bark. These injuries result in sick and structurally week trees. It is essential that future damage be prevented. The only effective way to prevent future trunk damage is to eliminate all grass within an 18" radius of the trunk. My lengthy experience tells me that simply asking the lawn mowing service to be careful is essentially a waste of time. The first option for grass control is the careful application of anon-selective contact herbicide such as gyphosate (Roundup®). Caution! In the hands of an inexperienced and/or unlicensed applicator, herbicides can kill trees through careless contact with tree bark or sprouts. The 2°d grass control option is to manually remove the sod within an 18" radius of the trunk. The resultant tree well should then be mulched to a 2" depth to reduce re-sprouting of grass. Page 2 of~. . recision ree `T/Vorks, Inc. Summary of recommendations 1) Remove 2 spruce hazard trees 2) Columnar prune several conifers 3) Prune mugos and willows adjacent to pool 4} Spray aspen mites, pines for MPB prevention, and mites in one fir. 5) HOA board needs to decide of benefits of keeping cottonwoods located within 50 feet of pavement outweigh the cost of ongoing repairs to pavement surface. 6) Replace and install new beaver protective screening (1.5 X trunk circumference). 7) Remove all sod within 18" of tree trunks and replace w/ 2" of mulch I look forward to answering any questions you may have about this report.
