P.D. Box 606 • tiai! Colorado 81658 • (970) 926-3594 February 9, 2009 Mr. John Cahill, Construction Manager Eagle River Water & Sanitation District 846 Forest Rd Vail CO 81657 Re: Evaluation of 3 pines Dear John, On February 5, 2009, I met you at the east bridge of Lupine D. to evaluate the condition of 3 lodgepole pines. This brief report will summarize my findings. Limiting conditions: 1) Reported is limited to conditions observed only on the single site visit day. 2) Due to snow depth of 3' to 4', the trunk base and root collar were not inspected. All three mature pines are located immediately southeast of the junction of east Lupine Dr. and the Gore Creek bridge. All three pines are limbless the bottom 20' of trunk. All have minor signs of mistletoe (parasitic plant) infection, moderate amount of Western gall rust (a minor parasitic pathogen), and slightly chlorotic and sparse foliage. Two pines are 18" in diameter. The third pine is 15" in diameter. The heights range from 80' to 90' (measured with clinometer). The two pines closest to the river have very one-sided crowns, most likely due to the past loss of a tree within the direct path of the proposed trench. If after snow-melt the detection of a stump confirms this assumption, the proposed trench would encounter slightly less live roots from these three existing trees. The tree that exhibits the most defects is the pine closest to the bridge and road. This tree has a large Western gall rust canker on the main trunk at approximately a 40' ht. I consider this defect to be moderate. I also detected the top of what appears to be a large basal scare on the trunk at snowline (40" from the ground). Given limitation of the visible trunk, I did not detect any major structural defects. The condition of these trees is fair. Baring any major lower trunk, root collar, or buttress root defects, I currently consider these trees as worthy of attempting to save. Finally, I recommend an inspection of the trench to evaluate root damage. Sincerely, [Submitted by email) Mark Stelle, ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist S CA ~- n~~ ~MarkaStelle
