Application forms signed by the HOA representativeഀ and a check for $81.00 to cover the application fees ($20 for tree removal and $61 forഀ the sign) are also enclosed.ഀ Tree Removal Requestഀ In support of the application for tree removal, I have enclosed:ഀ ■ The arborist's reportഀ ■ The property survey indicating which trees are to be removed (3 copies)ഀ ■ A landscaping plan (3 copies) and 8-1/2"x11" plan enlargementsഀ ■ The planting schedule showing quantities proposed for new trees and shrubsഀ ■ Site photosഀ The arborist, Mark Stelle of Precision Tree Works, Inc., has recommended the removalഀ of 18 Cottonwoods. In the initial phase of work owners have opted to remove andഀ replace only 9 trees, those deemed most hazardous. In addition, we propose removalഀ of a single Aspen adjacent to the general location of the new sign (see photos #1 andഀ #5). To replace them, the landscape plan proposes 30 new trees: 24 Aspen (minimumഀ 2-1/2" caliper), 3 Cottonwood (3" caliper), and three 12-foot Spruce. In addition,ഀ extensive shrub and perennial planting are proposed along the entry drive. Theഀ landscape plan reflects the owners' objectives to protect condominium buildings A-Eഀ from trees that might fall, restore views from and sun into those units, enhance theഀ 970.476.9537 phone/fax 970.470.2930 cell sddorwardac msn.comഀ entry drive, and improve the view from the entry toward the constructed slope beneathഀ 1-70 to the north (see photo #1). In the longer term, this will be the initial phase of theഀ HOA's comprehensive plan to upgrade the landscaping and reduce water consumptionഀ and landscape maintenance at the complex.ഀ Sign Replacementഀ I have attached photos to show the existing sign (photos #1, #5, #6) and a drawing toഀ illustrate the proposed sign, which will be in the same location and similar in scale toഀ the existing. The column supporting the sign will be 6'-4" from existing ground on theഀ left side where the ground is lower. (The existing post on that side measures 5'-8" fromഀ FG). The sign itself will be 7 feet wide and 1'-8" from top to bottom (total area 11.7 sq.ഀ feet). It will be constructed of sign foam and painted a warm pale gray to match theഀ buildings. (See enclosed elevation.) Letters will be stud-mounted metal in an anodizedഀ bronze color. The sign board will be secured by horizontal wood 4x4's top andഀ bottom, stained a dark olive brown compatible with the color palette of the buildingsഀ (see photo #8). A groove in the reveal of the top rail will hide LED rope lighting toഀ illuminate the sign. The columns will be veneered with gray Montana Macgregor Lakeഀ ledge stone (see photo #7).ഀ The HOA wishes to undertake the work this spring as soon as the snow melts, so weഀ greatly appreciate your assistance in expediting approval of our applications.ഀ Please call with any questions.ഀ Sincerely,ഀ 4k" DAWA401ഀ Sherry Dorward ASLA LLAഀ Cc: Ms. Andrea Tarr, Gore Creek Meadows HOAഀ Enclosuresഀ Prec&Nഀ ~2 Treeഀ Works, Inc.ഀ July 3, 2008ഀ P.O. This report will document my findings andഀ provide my recommendations.ഀ Assignmentഀ Identify cottonwood trees that contain sufficient structural defects to justify tree removal.ഀ Limiting Conditionsഀ • All inspections were limited to visual examination of accessible parts, withoutഀ excavation, probing, boring or other invasive procedures, unless otherwise noted.ഀ • This report is limited to the trees and conditions specifically mentioned. Theഀ consultant assumes no liability for the failure of trees or parts of trees, eitherഀ inspected or otherwise. The consultant assumes no responsibility to report onഀ conditions of any tree(s) not specifically requested by the named client.ഀ • There is no warranty or guarantee, expressed or implied, that further problems orഀ deficiencies of residual trees may not arise in the future.ഀ Observations & Inspection Procedureഀ The most significant structural defect in cottonwood trees at this property is stem-girdlingഀ roots (SGR)'. Cottonwood trees exhibiting a lack of readily visible buttress roots wereഀ excavated with a pressure washer on May 30th to determine the extent of damage to treeഀ stability. Although all cottonwoods on the property have some degree of SGR, treesഀ exhibiting the most extreme examples of this defect were flagged for suggested removal.ഀ 1 Stem-girdling roots (SGR) - Roots that grow around the trunk in a circular manner, constricting otherഀ roots or restricting trunk growth. The restriction caused by these roots often leads to tree structural failureഀ and significant damage/injury to adjacent targets upon falling.ഀ z Buttress root - A large woody root located at the base of the trunk; usually associated with exaggeratedഀ girth; provides structural support by anchoring the root plate of the tree to the soil.ഀ i\CAഀ a rtഀ ~1aza Stelle-ഀ Precisionഀ Treeഀ Works, Inc.ഀ Inventory of tree removal candidatesഀ Bldg Aഀ Of the two large front cottonwoods, only the west tree exhibits sufficient size andഀ quantity of SGRs to justify removal. The east cottonwood would benefit from majorഀ pruning of scaffold limbs which hang over the building (specifically the chimney),ഀ but does not exhibit sufficient girdling roots to justify removal at this time.ഀ Bldg Bഀ The single cottonwood located at the west side of the entrance exhibits marginallyഀ sufficient SGRs to justify removal.ഀ Bldg Cഀ The single cottonwood located at the east side of the entrance exhibits a 3" girdlingഀ root which is strangling the windward side to the tree. Removal recommended.ഀ Bldg Dഀ The single cottonwood located at the west side of the entrance has a very largeഀ exposed north buttress root, but several small/medium SGRs throughout the otherഀ three quadrants. This tree exhibits marginally sufficient SGRs to justify removal.ഀ Bldg Eഀ Two large cottonwoods exhibit leeward lean and significant SGRs. Removal isഀ recommended for both cottonwoods.ഀ Bldg Gഀ Two cottonwoods located behind (south edge of property) exhibit lean and lackഀ visible buttress roots. Both are recommended for removal.ഀ Bldg Hഀ Four cottonwoods have lack of a visible buttress roots. Two of the four are locatedഀ inn the southwest corner, one at the northwest corner, and one to the rear (south edgeഀ of property).ഀ Bldg Jഀ Two cottonwoods located behind (south edge of property) have lack of a visibleഀ buttress roots. Removal of both is recommended.ഀ Northeast of poolഀ Three cottonwoods located adjacent to mail boxes exhibit SGRs and significantഀ leeward lean. All three are recommended for removal.ഀ Southwest of poolഀ One cottonwood exhibiting SGRs and significant lean is located across the street fromഀ Units M1 & M2. Hydraulic excavation revealed a root crown that showing anഀ exceptional example of SGRs. Removal is recommended.ഀ Page 2 of 3ഀ PrecisNഀ ~~rrr~~ee~)ഀ "works, Inc.ഀ Summary of recommendationsഀ There is no viable remedial procedure to alleviate the damaging effects of stem-girdlingഀ roots on medium or large size trees. Once significant girdling roots are detected, the onlyഀ reasonable treatment is to remove the tree. I recommend the removal of 18 cottonwoodsഀ on this property.ഀ It is widely documented in arboricultural research that most SGRs can be prevented byഀ following published industry standards for planting practices. Newly planted landscapeഀ trees that are properly prepared by exposing the root colla? and planting above finishedഀ grade rarely develop significant SGRs. To minimize problems with future plantingഀ projects, I recommend a qualified consulting arborist be retained to audit the plantingഀ project immediately upon completion.ഀ I look forward to answering any questions you may have about this report.ഀ Sincerely,ഀ [Submitted by email]ഀ Mark Stelle, Registered Consulting Arboristഀ Cc: Kenton Krohlowഀ Attachment: Site mapഀ 3 Root collar (root flare or root crown) - A point at tree base where a main buttress root and the trunkഀ merge.ഀ Page 3 of 3ഀ 1ഀ 6ഀ x oഀ a FF # i oe +>2 r z Cഀ ff Jഀ 10ഀ v x d T AUTO, d . o I .i z 30ഀ 3 a y 3a . 2 ; yi I a ouഀ Ale nu " CA; fഀ WN HOD SO not p Y A,ഀ •ഀ HISഀ Ell XT 41 - 1% SO qഀ '.~a s rs <r n dr r t 7: ~:i ~t'ഀ Too! ,a M€ * Fa ep sഀ T Y! ay f +r ti; r.
