It is recommended that the installer be familiar with these requirements , with pcg1 codes and any special requirements of the local fire authority having jurisdiction . The electronic Multi-Alert sounder and the supplementary signaling strobe are intended to be connected to the alarm indicating circuit of a listed fire alarm control panel . The = o. • el M°A 7;2`2;,' s suitable for connection to either a 12 or 24 vdc panel. Models SS-24, MA/SS-241 require 24 Volt pa ts, o 'el "' - 2 & MA/SS- 121 require 12 volt panels . Model lyW-12/241 is suitable for outdoor applications when used with a weatherproof back box (Model WBB) . There are eight different sounds which can be selected by breaking programming tabs off of the printed circuit board . These are broken off by grasping them with a needle nosed pliers near the end of the tab and bending up. The sound selected will determine the maximum current and sound power output per device . It may be used only in the private mode when used with a 12 volt panel . i ' Under no circumstance can the 24 volt fire panel output exceed 33vdc or be less than 18vdc . There are some applications where it would be desirable to drive the sounder and strobe as independent devices . The BRK sounder/strobe combination model MA/SS- 121 or MA/SS-241 are easily configured for this feature . The terminal connection for this application is shown in the wiring diagram fig . 3 . Independent strobe operation in a "coded" system requires a separate "non-coded" power supply for the strobe . 1 156-266-( System Sensor / A Division of BF 780 McClure Rd . , Aurora, IL 60504 (708) 851 -50c ; FAX (708) 851 -93 • WARNING LIMITATIONS OF SOUNDER/STROBE : The Sounder and/or Strobe will not work without power. The sounder/strobe gets its power from the Fire/ Security panel monitoring the alarm system . If power is cut off for any reason , the sounder/strobe will not provide the desired audio or visual warning . The Sounder may not be heard . The loudness of the sounder meets (or exceeds) current Underwriters Labora- tories' standards . However, the sounder may not alert a sound sleeper or one who has recently used drugs or has been drinking alcoholic beverages . The Sounder may not be heard if it is placed on a different floor from the person in hazard or if placed too far away to be heard over the ambient noise such as traffic , air conditioners , machinery or music appliances that may prevent alert persons from hearing the alarm . The Sounder may not be heard by persons who ve hearing impaired. The S(gnal Strobe may not be seen. The electronic visual warning signal that flashes at least once every three seconds meets or exceeds current Underwriters Laboratories' standards and uses an extremely reliable xenon flash tube. The visual warnirg signal is suitable for direct viewing and must be installed within an area where it - _ .F .,. _ _. :., b seen by building occupants. The strobe must not be installed in direct sunlight or areas of high light _►there_the.visua flash minht be disregarded or not seer Tfe strobe may not be seen by the visually impaired. • BRK recommends that the Multi-Alert Sounder and Signal Strobe always be used in combination so that the risks from .ny qf the above limitations are minimized . > f . ."'%±` . . . . : " . `;;C? . ..::.;, _ . , . . Wire sizes up to 12 gauge wire (2 .5 square mm) maybe used with the base . For best system performance , the power ( +) and (—) loop wires should be twisted pair and installed in separate grounded conduit to protect the bop from extraneous electrical interference. Smoke detectors and alarm system control panels have specifications for allowable loop resistance . Consult the control panel manufacturer's specifications for the total loop resistance allowed for the particular model control panel being used before wiring the detector loops . Locate installations where normal ambient temperatures do not exceed 100°F. Wire connections are made by simply stripping about 3/8 inch of insulation from the end of the wire (use strip gauge molded in base) , sliding the bare end of the wire under the clamping plate , and tightening the clamping plate screw. A typical wiring diagram for a 2-wire detector system is shown in Figure 3. SSD smoke detectors are marked with a compatibility identifier located as the last digit of a five digit code stamped on the back of the product. WARNING LIMITATIONS OF SMOKE DETECTORS This smoke detector is designed to activate and initiate emergency action , but will do so only when used in conjunc- tion with other equipment. This detector is designed for installation in accordance with NFPA standards 71 , 72A, 726, 72C , 72D, and72E. Smoke detectors will not work without power. AC or DC powered smoke detectors will not work if the power supply is cut off for any reason. Smoke detectors will not sense fires which start where smoke does not reach the detectors . Smoke from fires in chimneys, in walls , on roofs or on the other side of closed doors may not reach the smoke detector and alarm it. A detector may not detect a fire developing on another level of a building . For this reason , detectors should be - - - -- — --- - .- -- .. . . _ . _ . .__ __ __ located on every level of a building. - - --- — Smoke detectors have sensing limitations , too. lonization detectors offer a broad range fire-sensing capability, but they are better at detecting fast , flaming fires than slow smoldering fires. Photoelectronic detectors sense smolder- ing fires better than flaming fires. Because fires develop in different ways, and are often unpredictable in their growth , neither type of detector is always best , and a given detector may not always provide warning of a fire . In general, detectors cannot be expected to provide warnings for fires resuting from inadequate fire protection prac- tices, violent explosions , escaping gas, improper storage of flammable liquids like cleaning solvents, other safety hazards, or arson . Smoke detectors used in high air velocity conditions may fail to alarm due to dilution of smoke densities created by such frequent and rapid air exchanges. Additionally, high air velocity environments may create increased dust contamination, demanding more frequent maintenance. Smoke detectors cannot last forever. Smoke detectors contain electronic parts. Even though detectors are made to last over 10 years, any of these parts could fail at any time. Therefore , test your smoke detector system per NFPA 72E at least semiannually. Clean and take care of your smoke detectors regularly. Taking care of the fire detection system you have installed will measurably reduce your product liability risks.
