The sliding snon entrained considerable debris and aspen trees, some up to 7 - 8 lnches in dlameter (25-35 years of age). This ls further supported by l,lr. D'ickinson's statement that there had not been avalanche act'lvity c'lose to the dwelling slnce their purchase in 1974. The general slope sti'll contains a significant number of 12 - lE inch dlaneter evergreens which are 70 - 100 years of age. Hoyever a falrly narroy avalanche path is apparent. This path runs northuest toyards the southyest corner of the building and toyards the runout zone of the number 7 ava'lanche to the yest of the duelling. The slope steepens to sllghtly over 400 fron horizontal jn the upper 150 feet of the slope inmediately belov the 'lover cliff band. The lower portlon of the s1ope imediately south of the dvelling is at 28.50 slope (see Figure 3, and the photos). The area above the lower band of cliffs yas closely observed to see lf any evidence of avalanche activlty existed. Thls area has a fairly thick stand of evergreens yith nany havlng 12 - 18 lnch dianeters. Evidence of broken llmb patterns or other ava'lanche activity was not found. 3. 4. -2- spring avalanche ls the most like'ly design event at this slte vhen both aspects are considered. The probab'lltty of a dry floving or dry slab avalanche originating belov the cllff band and affecting thls site ls less than lx or greater than a lO(Fyear recurrence interval. Any remed'ial structures constructed as protection for the rret sprlng avalanches horever vi]l provlde some protectlon from all types of aval anches. III - TERFIAIN A,ND VEGiETATI()N The topography of the lot and the surrounding area is shoyn ln Figure -Thjs topography and lot boundaries were surveyed by Inter-Hountain Engineering in late September of 1993. The lower edge of the cliff bank is shovn on the terrajn profile. The s'lope of the cliff varies betreen nearly vertical to a ratio of 2 vert'ical to t horlzontal (2:l). Traverse sectlons from the base of the lot upuard to the base of the cliff vere developed from the mapping by Inter-Mountain Engineering. The critJcal sectJon is shown on Figure 2. This section vas used for the terra'in ana'lysis and ava1 anche dynani cs analyses. The tree cover in the area south of the ]ot up to the base of the cliff is noderate vith many aspen but also a signlflcant number of con'ifers sme up to 20 - 24 lnches in diameter. l{hiIe a site speclflc dendrochronological or tree rlng analysis has not been performed on the tress in thls particular area, lt ls obvious, based upon other work in the upper Gore Valley, that these diameter conifers are on the order of 100 years old. The number and areal extent of these sizeab'le conlfers and the pattern of low limbs on these trees do not lnd'icate slgnificant or frequent ava'lanche activity in the past. -4- occurrences. tJhile some utilizat'ion of simllar physical characterJstics and models is certainly valid, extrapolation of najor sllde path statistical data to these rather unique small avalanche paths ls not necessarily valid. V- AVALANCFIE TYPES AND LOADINGS A. Essential'ly no sunmelt crust formatlon or so'lar radiation recrystal I ization. 2. Settlenrent is gradual and basically controlled by snoupack buildup and gravjty. 3. Litt'lE or no vJnd slab formation. 4. The fudings of our observations and recommeodations for the foundation design are presented in this report. We previously observed the excavation for interior footing pads at the site as part of the remodel, submitting our findings in a report dated JuJy 3, 2007 under the abovejob number. Three isolated footings are proposed along the south side ofthe existing residence to support a new porch roof. An allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf was assumed for the foundation design. At &e time of our site visit, excavatiotr for the tbree footings was underway and partially complete. The western footing area had been dug about 4 feet below aod the eastern pad about 3 feet the adjacent ground sutface, and the middle footing excavation had not begun. The soils exposed in the bottom ofthe western and eastera footing excavations consisted ofmedium dense, clayey sand and gravel with cobbles aud boulders. No frsa water was encountered itr the excavation and the soils were moist. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature ofthe proposed conshuctiou, spread footings placed on the utrdishrbed natural coarse granular soils designed for an allowable bearing pressure of2,000 psfcan be used for support ofthe new foundation loads. There could be some settlement with respect to the existing structue which should be considered in the design. All existing fill and loose distubed soils in the footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the Paricer 303-841-7119 .
