PUBLIC WORKS AND THE PUBLIC WAY PERMIT PROCESS
How it relates to Building Permits:
Fill out the attached check list with the Building Permit Apnlication.
If yes was answered to any of the questions then a "Public Way" permit is required. You
can pick up an application at either Community Development, located at 75 South Frontage
Road or Public Works, located at 1309 Elkhorn Drive.
Notice sign-offs for utility companies. ALL utilities must field verify (locate) respective
utilities prior to signing application. Some utility companies require up to 48 hours notice to
schedule a locate.
A construction traffic control/staging plan must be prepared on a separate sheet of paper.
An approved site plan may also be used. This plan will show locations of all traffic control
devices (signs, cones, etc.) and the work zone, (area of construction, staging, etc.). This
plan will expire on November lst and will need to be resubmitted for consideration for
approval through the winter. Be aware that your resubmission for winter may be denied
depending on the location of construction.
Sketch of work being peformed must be submitted indicating dimensions (length, width
and depth of work). This may be drawn on the traffic control plan or a site plan for the job.
Submit completed application to the Public Work's office for review. If required, locates will
be scheduled for the Town of Vail electricians and irrigation crew. The locates take place in
the morning, but may require up to 48 hours to perform.
The Public Work's Construction Inspector will review the application and approve or deny
the permit. You will be contacted as to the status and any requirements that may be

o The Town of Vail Building Depadment has developed the following procedures to
ensure that new construction sites have adequately established proper drainage
from building sites along and adjacent to Town of Vail roads or streets.
The Town of Vail Public Works Department will be required to inspect and approve
drainage adjacent to Town of Vail roads or streets and the installation of temporary
or permanent culverts at access points from the road or street onto the construction
site. Such approval must be obtained prior to any requests for inspection by the
Town of Vail Building Department for footings, temporary electrical or any other
inspection. Please call Leonard Sandoval at479-2198 to request an inspection from
the Public Works Depaftment. Allow a minimum of 24 hour notice.
Also, the Town of Vail Public Works Department will be approving all final drainage

other debris or material upon any street, sidewalk, alley or public place, or any portion thereof.

come to Vail each year to sightsee, recreate, shop and to enjoy everything the Vail Valley has to offer.
The community and merchants rely upon our guest to generate revenue. Our summer/winter guests

investigation was conducted at the Kirl+arick residence to provide information related to tle
Repair of Existing Walt desiglrd by ne with drawing dated Nove,nb a 22, L998' lhe answer
is no, aone was needed, Reasons for this are:
I . The general mass refained by the exist'rng 6d! wa[t rcmainc stable and will be unaffeaed
by the proposed repairs- Thereforg the soils which zupport tho retaining wall and the
gLbil thbiliry ofttre wall were reasona,bly considered bdore ttre original constnrction
and have been proven by historioal pcrformance.
2- The repair is to replace rtre strength of the crib facing which is be;ng lost due to
deterioration ofmaterials. Thereforg the rcpair desigp does not involve soil grrestiols
witlinthe crib zone, but the historical stability of the structure does attest to the qality
ofthose soils.
A lslaining structure of this type must be fiee draiuing, must nol retaitr waE'r- I'he
odstiq structure was built with a pcrmeable gravel zone behind the face cribbing as can
be seen bctweeo thc open crib mcmbers. Thrs gravel and tle weep holcs to be
constructed in tbe repair facing, will continue to allow free fl;rinege ftom tbe $rusture-
SoiI anchorq tfie element of the repair which will bold the nsw concrete facing to the
still stable zone ofthe original retaining structure, do require adequate bondiry at dcPth
and this can be irr0ueuccd by soil conditions- Specific tests wc,re Dot r"ade in this case-
