At the request of Mr. Al Macsata, we have investigated the structural
integrity of two spec'ific problems called to his attention by your
Departrnent. These are our findings:
The inspector noted that a single co'lumn from the central ridge beam
bears on a slab on grade. At the time of our inspection, this column
supported approximately 13 kips of the potential roof load. To re-
duce the load at this point, the builder has agreed to add an addi-
tional column from the ridge beam to the floor slab at the west cor-
ner of the stairwell. This limits the maximum possib'le point load on
the s'lab to about 10 k'ips. l.le found the slab to be 6 inches th'ick
above the top of the reinforcing. Assuming the builder included rea-
sonable concrete cover be1ow the reinforcing, we have determined that
the co]umn load will be djstributed over approximate'ly 3.2 square
feet of soi'|. This translates to 3,125 PSF bearing pressure on the
soi'l . This does not seem excessive for the rocky soil found on thesite. Our check also indicated that under these conditions, punch-
ing shear and bending jn the slab will not be a problem.
The other area we investigated was the north-south beam at the center
of the garage. The bu'ilder anticipated a doub'le 2 x 12 beam' but re-
placed it with a ll5 x 16 steel section. The capacity of the steel
section is 2,125 PLF. l^|e anticipate a maximum possible'load of 1,920
PLF, indicating that the steel option is satisfactory. The builder
should ensure that the loading on the steel member is reasonab'ly dis-
tributed. This can be accomp'lished by the addition of double 2 x 6
posts at approximately 3 feet 6 inches on center to support the _o1ue-
lam header above. In this wa.y, shear problems at the steel beam
supports are e'l iminated.
