The excavation consisted of one holedug to about 3 feet below the footing of the existing building.At the bottom of the excavation was water.The water was flowing from under the building.We recommended that sample of the water be tested to detennine the source of the water.ifthe source is ground water,it should be contained in a trench lined with a filter fabric.A perforated pipe,4-inch diameter,should be laid over the fabric and should be covered with cLean gravel.The depth of the gravel should be a minimum oftwo feet and above the seepage line.The drain should be sloping to a daylight location.The soil exposed in the excavation was a fill, consisting of clayey-gravelly sand over a thick layer of topsoil.The depth of the excavation waS nine to 10 feet. We discussed different alternatives for the support of the propOsed addition.One was to over excavate the unsuitable soil and replace it with a structural fill,compacted to 100%of the maximum dry density and within 2%of the optimum moisture content.The other alternative was to leave the fill in place and support the propo~addition with helical piers,deSigned by your structural engineer.We also,discussed strait shaft piers,but the cost was considered uneconomical.From a follow-up telephone conversation,we tmderstand that the proposed addition will be IiUPported with helical piers.' If this man is a reputable builder.and has a builders lrcense, I think the village should force the man to move the driveway and repay me for dollars spent.I have enclosed copies of the bills and the letter sent to John requesting payment.This $3,535.00 does not include carpeting or lights I had put in.This $3.535.00 does include items needed to make the building ready for occupancy.
